Kissell seeks to help protect veterans' pensions

Rep. Larry Kissell (N.C.-08) is co-sponsoring the Veterans Pensions Protection Act. This legislation is intended to protect veterans from losing their pension if they receive payments to cover expenses incurred after an accident, theft or loss.

Currently, Department of Veterans Affairs considers many sources of revenue when determining a veteran's annual income, including reimbursement of expenses related to accidents, theft and loss. Reimbursements are considered income, and if the income exceeds the income limits set by the VA, the veteran may not qualify for pension or could lose benefits.

"Our veterans answered our nation's call to duty without hesitation. It is unacceptable that they would be denied their rightful benefits because of a loophole in the law," Kissell said. "This is important legislation to protect our veterans. We owe our veterans an enormous debt of gratitude for their bravery and service to our country. The Veterans Pensions Protection Act ensures they are not being shortchanged because of circumstances beyond their control."

The legislation would change existing law to exempt these reimbursements when considering a veteran's income qualifications for pension and benefits.
