The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has chosen Saturday as the day for local chapter members to wear red and sponsor a public activity to raise the awareness of the seriousness of heart disease.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, taking the life of one in three, each year. African-American women are at an increased risk due to factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

The AKA Salisbury chapter (Delta Xi Omega) is sponsoring a health fair Saturday, co-sponsored by the Rowan Regional Medical Center, at J.F. Hurley YMCA, 828 Jake Alexander Blvd., from 10 a.m. to noon.

The “Pink Goes Red” Health Fair will have medical professionals on site to answer questions and conduct blood pressure screenings. Brochures on health issues, namely, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity will be available.

Health awareness and prevention is one of the top initiatives under the national president Carolyn House Stewart’s administration. The health fair is an effort to help achieve that mission.

The president of Delta Xi Omega is Fonda Kirk and the chairperson for this event is Marva McCain.

Contact Marva McCain at 704-640-0087 for more information on the event.
