Dr. Ada M. Fisher, who has been a familiar name on Rowan County ballots over the past decade, has announced that she will not be a candidate for any office in 2010.

"I do thank the people of Rowan County for at times allowing me to serve them in a volunteer or elective experience," Fisher said in a press release. "It has been my pleasure to offer my talents to those who could benefit from them."

Fisher is a former member of the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education. She has run unsuccessfully as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House and N.C. House.

Fisher said she has decided against any candidacy because of a recent rash of deaths among her family and friends and a request from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to donate all of her papers and memorabilia.

UNCG is her alma mater.

Fisher remains a member of the Republican National Committee. She said she wants "to help get and keep the Republican house in order and elect good candidates who will put our citizens first and stick to the Constitution."

"This is a good time to get my personal things in better order, write more and keep up with medicine in trying to figure out how we fix a health-care system that is under-serving people," she added.

Fisher's other interests include the Carnegie Library at Livingstone College and further development of a car — Ecovehicle.com — with her friend John Dabels.

Fisher said she also hopes to receive a call to join in service in Haiti through the Red Cross or Salvation Army, given her disaster training and "fearlessness."

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
