Staff reportA longtime Salisbury dentist is now a candidate for the U.S. Congressional seat now held by Patrick McHenry.

Scott Keadle, president of Rowan Dental Associates on Jake Alexander Boulevard, recently announced plans to challenge McHenry in the Republican primary on May.

Keadle, a resident of Mooresville, is now a Iredell County Commissioner, a seat he won in 2008.

According to various published accounts he plans to put up $250,000 of his own money in an effort to win the 10th district seat.

While a resident of Rowan County, Keadle ran unsuccessfully for several offices including the N.C. Senate, Rowan County Board of Commissioners and 12th district U.S. House of Representatives.

As the GOP nominee in 1998, he lost to incumbent Mel Watt of Charlotte.

In 2000, he lost a bid for the N.C. 23 Senate to Democrat Cal Cunningham. He challenged Cunningham's election based on his residency, taking the challenge to the N.C. Supreme Court, but the court refused to intervene allowing Cunningham to take office.

Keadle is the second GOP challenger to McHenry. Vance Patterson, a Burke County business owner also announced plans to enter the race.

What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
