A generation came of age celebrating his birthday, but never hearing him speak live on CNN. A nation grappled with issues of race and economic injustice without the benefit of his evolving wisdom. And four children grew up with a legacy to live up to, but without a father to guide and teach them. Four decades after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. fell to an assassin's bullet on the balcony of a Memphis motel, his family and fellow Americans ponder the question: What if he had lived?
