Toastmasters The Goldmine Toastmasters Club held its annual "Humorous" and "Evaluation" contests recently.

The winner of the Humorous contest was Jay Nodine. He spoke on the topic, "How to Avoid Disappointment."

Other contestants in the humorous contest were Joyce Preston (runner-up), Jennie Brasefield and Shyam Narayan.

Kim Jackson won the evaluation contest. Also in the contest were Sam Mullis (runner-up) and Betty Walker.Bill Battermannof Salisbury was the featured speaker, speaking from the title, "A Public Enemy to Reckon With." Past District Gov. Bill Mintz was chief judge, and Al Minter of Goldmine was emcee. University City Toastmasters helped with judging. Nodine and Jackson will represent the Goldmine Club in the area contests to be held in October.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Delta Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. held its annual retreat on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Holiday Inn.

The theme of the retreat was Sisterhood Sincere and Rare: Commitment, Communication, and Cooperation. Chapter members worked together to plan activities for implementing the Sorority's International Extraordinary Service Program (ESP).

These service projects will focus on entrepreneurship, economic development, economic growth of the black family, and health resource management to benefit members of the sorority, the broader Salisbury-Rowan community and collaborating organizations and partners.

Carolyn Holt, Lillian Morgan, Sarah Lightner and Renese Bates were the retreat presenters. Fonda Kirk was the retreat coordinator.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, Washington, D.C.

Cecelia McCorkle is the local chapter president.

Holshouser reunionThe O.M. Holshouser Reunion was held on Sept. 26, 2009, at 5:30 p.m. a St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

The E.L. Holshouser descendants were the hosts. The meal consisted of a pig pickin' prepared by Todd Holshouser, Scott Cozart, Garett Cozart and Travis Tidwell. Side items were baked beans, potato salad, slaw and a variety of desserts.

Red Hats

On Friday, Sept. 18, Classy Red Hatters enjoyed a down home dinner prepared by Phyllis Sides at her home.

Sara Owens is the group's queen mother.
