Cleveland

— For more than 100 years, on the Saturday before the first Sunday in August, which is July 31 this year, people from three states have been gathering at Old Providence Presbyterian Church in northern Rowan County for old fashioned gospel singing and shaped note singing.

It begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m. with a covered dish dinner on the grounds and soft drinks iced down in galvanized tubs.

The showcase of the event will be the old-timers who still remember how to sing the shaped notes, trying out their voices on “Amazing Grace” and other gospel favorites. The public is invited. Those who know how to sing the shaped notes are invited to come and demonstrate this art form, which is becoming rare.

The church is located at 5500 S. River Church Road, Cleveland. To get to the church from Salisbury travel north on Woodleaf Road, which changes into Cool Spring Road past Woodleaf, turn right onto South River Church Road at Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church and take a sharp right, staying on South River Church Road. • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
