WINSTON-SALEM — Reynolda House Museum of American Art will host its third annual "Cinema Under the Stars" evening film series in August.

Co-sponsored by the School of Filmmaking of the North Carolina School of the Arts, this year's series celebrates New York City in anticipation of the museum's fall exhibition, "Seeing the City: Sloan's New York," which opens Oct. 4.

Films from different eras will be screened at 9 p.m. each Saturday night in August and the first Saturday in September. Weather permitting, the movies will be shown outside on the lawn and include a pre-screening talk by local scholars.

If it rains, films will be shown inside the museum. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and film goers are encouraged to come early and picnic on the lawn.

The gates open at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for the general public, $3 for members and students.

Aug. 2: Blake Edwards' "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard;

Aug. 9: Merian Cooper's and Ernest Schoedsack's "King Kong" (1933) starring Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong;

Aug. 16: Woody Allen's "Manhattan" (1979) starring Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Michael Murphy, and Mariel Hemingway.

Aug. 23: Ivan Reitman's "Ghostbusters" (1984) starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Sigourney Weaver.

Aug. 30: Norman Jewison's "Moonstruck" (1987) starring Cher, Nicholas Cage, and Olympia Dukakis.

Sept. 6: Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" (2002) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz.

The fall exhibition, "Seeing the City: Sloan's New York," will be on view from Oct. 4,-Jan. 4. The exhibition features the drawings, paintings, etchings, and photographs of the Ashcan School artist John Sloan who came to New York City in 1904 and created artwork focused on street life, shop windows, parks, elevated trains, and the city dweller's experience. The exhibition was organized by the Delaware Art Museum, which received generous support from the Henry Luce Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Helen Farr Sloan Trust.

Spirits and Spaceships

ASHEBORO — The month of August will bring to the Sara Smith Self Gallery paintings by two Asheboro residents, husband and wife team Rich and Frankie Powell.

Exhibit dates are Aug. 4-28 with a reception for the artists on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Rich and Frankie paint with two different styles. Rich's paintings are exact and detailed, but the subjects are a fanciful to a degree beyond whimsy, bordering on futuristic nostalgia. Frankie's work is looser, more fluid, and largely symbolic in nature.

Rich is a professional artist by trade, as has been Frankie. His work has been published in national publications and his editorial cartoons have appeared on the Asheboro Courier-Tribune op/ed page. Frankie's current activities have taken her back to the classroom for additional degree work.

The Self Gallery is located in the Moring Arts Center at 123 Sunset Ave., Asheboro. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.

Jazz preview

The Rowan Blues & Jazz Society invites you to "Sneak-a-Peek" of their upcoming festival with a preview concert Thursday, Aug. 14, 8-11 p.m. in Gallery One Twenty, EastSquare Artworks, 120 E. Innes St.

The featured performance for the evening will be by the Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin Blues Band.

Margolin is a blues guitar player and singer who carries on the "old school" Chicago Blues style while creating original music today. From 1973-1980, he played guitar in the band of Chicago Blues legend Muddy Waters, touring worldwide and recording. In 1980, he started his own band and is still touring and recording.

Leo Rucker, a well-known Winston-Salem artist, will be painting on site and donating the work for auction at the end of the evening. Funds will benefit Rowan Blues & Jazz Society. Bruce Wilson of Fine Frame Gallery will be the auctioneer.
