I got in a hurry earlier this week with the Wednesday Farmers Market report of the tomato tasting trial held last Saturday at the market.
Unfortunately, I left out some important information about the test.
The blind taste test was conducted by Cooperative Extension and Master Gardener Volunteers using fruit donated by participating vendors. Tomatoes were lined up and identified only by number. Many participating in the test may only remember the tomatoes as a number.
Below are the results with the numbered tomatoes that may be of interest to those who participated:
- Tomato 1 — Cherokee Purple, placed first.
- Tomato 2 — Better Boy, placed third.
- Tomato 3 — Paul Robertson, placed fourth.
- Tomato 4 — German Johnson, placed second (barely edged out).
- Tomato 5 — Dr. Gardner's Pink, placed fifth.
- Tomato 6 — Carolina Gold, placed sixth
Cherokee Purple and German Johnson, heirloom tomatoes, were almost dead even as the most popular tomato in the test, while Better Boy finished a close second. Paul Robinson was fourth, followed by the Randy Gardner pink test tomato. The yellow variety, Carolina Gold, finished dead last.
Farmer's market vendors donating fruit were: Duard Cress, Eagle and Son Produce and Red Barn Farms.
