Broadway in the Mountains: Broadway performer Charlotte d’Amboise puts participants through their paces in a musical theatre workshop last summer at Western Carolina University. 'Nutcracker' on sale

Tickets to "The Nutcracker" will go on sale to the public July 7. Because of the popularity of the event, there will be reserved seating in Keppel Auditorium at Catawba College.

"This is the first time, I believe, that the Salisbury Symphony has offered reserved seating," said Executive Director Linda Jones. "We had several requests for that last year when seats became more difficult to find for audience members who arrived a little closer to curtain time. We hope this will solve the problem and make the concert even more enjoyable for everyone."

There will be two performances of "The Nutcracker," a collaboration between the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and the Piedmont Dance Theatre, on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008: a 2:30 matinee and a 6:30 evening performance.

Tickets for orchestra and mezzanine seating are $25 for adults (ages 19 and older) and $12 for children (18 and younger). Tickets for balcony seating are $20 for adults and $10 for children.

Just for Girls

Waterworks Visual Arts Center presents a special art class in conjunction with the summer gallery exhibition honoring generations of female artists-"Altered Art: Empowering Girls-Image and Identity," 2-4:15 p.m., July 21-25.

The class is for participants in grade 7 through college age. Students will use painting, sewing, stamping, calligraphy and photo transfer to create jewelry, shadow boxes and journals.

The cost is $55 for Waterworks members, and $70 for nonmembers.

Music theatre camp

CULLOWHEE – Western Carolina University will welcome more than 50 budding theatre performers from across the Southeast during the Triple Arts Broadway Series, to be held July 20-Aug. 3.

The camp will offer the young artists the chance to experience the art and craft of musical theatre performance with Broadway stars Terrence Mann and Charlotte d'Amboise.

The two-week workshop will include all aspects of musical theatre performance –audition techniques, song interpretation, scene study, dance techniques and master classes. The public is invited to attend the participants' final performance free of charge at 3 p.m. Aug. 3 in the Fine and Performing Arts Center on the WCU campus.

A limited number of spaces in the workshop are still available for applicants ages 16-22. The cost of the Triple Arts Broadway Series workshop, including tuition, room and board, is $1,999.

WINSTON SALEM — The Children's Museum of Winston-Salem announces a new, affordable way to keep families entertained close to home this summer with a new summer reciprocal discount program and four new levels of membership.
