They're not alone: Ghost appearances keep life interesting for local family
E-mail to a friendSalisbury Post Five people live in Kim and Steve Etters' house on Kerr Street — and, they believe — at least that many ghosts. Three have made their presence known enough times to earn names: Princess, Sweaty Boy and Mr. Atwell, the name of the man who built the house. Princess is described by the Etters children — 20-year-old KatiEarl, 16-year-old Casiann and 14-year-old Chase — and a family friend as being a little girl with no eyes and long ringlets who is always wearing a long white Victorian gown and white satin slippers. Sweaty Boy, according to several eyewitness accounts, has eyes, but his neck and head appear to be wet. He's usually seen wearing overalls and a red shirt. Mr. Atwell, a man of small stature, has brown hair and is wearing dress pants, a shirt and a vest. The first sighting happened in the fall of 2001, a year after the Etters moved into the 6,000-square-foot, three-story house. It happened in the downstairs formal sitting room after Kim had brought some tiles from an upstairs fireplace to use around a fireplace there. "I saw a shadow walk by the room," she says. Thinking it was her daughter, KatiEarl, she asked her a question, getting no response. "KatiEarl, if I'm going to talk to you," Kim says she said, "you better talk back when I ask you a question." KatiEarl was in another part of the house. One weekend in September 2002, Kim's sister brought her three sons — ages 3, 5 and 8 — to stay with them for a few days. Before her nephews left to return home, Kim says the 5-year-old asked her, "Are the cops going to come take that dead body out of Chase's closet?" "It was sort of a random question," she says. "I didn't know where that came from." The following Tuesday, Kim, an assistant principal at China Grove Elementary School, says she and the children heard a "thump, thump, thump, boom, boom, glass-breaking noise." Casiann says she was on the third floor and ran downstairs, meeting KatiEarl running up from the first floor. They found what they believe was the cause of that noise in KatiEarl's second-floor bedroom: a picture of a ballerina, the glass broken, lying in the middle of the floor with ballet trophies sitting up around it in a circle. KatiEarl's soccer trophies, however, were on the other side of the room, she says, most of them turned on their sides. Sitting on KatiEarl's bed, Casiann recalls, was the little girl who they would name Princess. "KatiEarl and I screamed bloody murder and ran down the stairs," she says. By the time they found Kim downstairs, she says they were hysterical. When a family friend offered to accompany the girls to KatiEarl's bedroom 10 minutes later, she also saw Princess. Kim says she said, "Girls, get out of this room now." In the meantime, Steve, a music professor at Catawba College, was getting ready to lead his first Community Band rehearsal when his family came running into his office. "The kids are crying," he recalls. "Kim's saying, 'I want to move. I'm not spending one more night in that house.'" Though that was the most dramatic paranormal activity, the Etters family and their guests continued to see Princess, Sweaty Boy and Mr. Atwell, as well as other ghosts, and hear unexplained noises such as footsteps and tapping. At one point, Kim says KatiEarl said, "Mom, I can't handle the high-pitched noise." Kim says she once called a minister and told him about the ghosts. "He said, 'Kim, this is not my league,'" she recalls. "'You may need to call a priest.' "The Etters also began to notice pennies being moved and materializing all over the house, and their family and friends reported finding unexplained pennies in their vehicles after visiting. Word that the house was haunted spread among friends in Salisbury, including Katie Scarvey, LifeStyle editor at the Post. That's why when Joe Wright of Paranormal Scene Investigators (PSI) of Rutherford County contacted Scarvey about setting up an investigation in a historic Salisbury home at no cost to the owners, she offered to contact the Etters family to see if they were interested. Eager to find out more about the strange occurrences in their home, they contacted Wright. After setting Saturday, March 29, as the date, Wright asked the Etters family to turn off their heat so ghosts would be forced to manifest close to the energy of team members and their equipment and would ultimately be more visible in the videos and photography. Wright and four PSI team members, including his wife, Jo, and their son, Chris, arrived around 5 p.m. and spent more than six hours in the house. Wright had already talked with the Etters family about the sightings and occurrences and asked team genealogist/historian Kim Woods to research the house's history and its previous residents. He and four team members spent another hour interviewing family members again upon arrival, after which Steve took Joe and cameraman David Harrill to visit the nearby Old English Cemetery, where former residents of the house are buried. Upon returning to the house, the PSI team unloaded thousands of dollars' worth of equipment, including 14 video cameras and numerous audio recorders, which they placed in strategic locations on all three floors. The Etters children left to spend the night with friends while Kim and Steve stayed behind, supplying team members with tea and homemade cookies, then Krispy Kreme doughnuts and coffee. Once the equipment was set up, Joe, David and Chris, who handles the electricity for the team, walked through the house every hour or so with electromagnetic field detectors and digital air thermometers to detect any changes that might indicate the presence of ghosts while Jo and Kim watched on computer screens showing multi-camera views. As the hours passed and the temperature dropped — the low that night dipped way into the 40s — the team continued the routine. After encountering some unexplained smells, an unusual vomiting episode by the Etters' cat, Angel, and a close call when Jo almost fell down the stairs, the PSI team packed up after 1 a.m. to go study their tapes. Returning a few weeks later to go over their findings, Wright played tapes of two definite Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs) and several other EVPs that are still under review. The first occurred when PSI member Kim Woods asked, "Are you unhappy that we're here?" The response was "Uh-huh," Wright says, and appeared to be the voice of a small child. A "yes" whisper, in what sounded like a little boy's voice, could also be heard after Casiann recalled seeing a boy she thought was her brother when she was outside the house looking in a front downstairs window. Also, several photographs taken during the investigation showed orbs, unexplained circles of light. Based on the voices and other findings, including pennies that materialized during the investigation, Wright ruled there was enough evidence to verify "an intelligent haunting" and other paranormal activity in the Etters' home. Steve says he and his family were pleased with the findings. "It's always nice to have confirmation of what you believe is happening," he says, "so people don't think you're crazy or you don't think you're crazy yourself." The scientific way the PSI team went about the investigation was especially interesting, he says. "They try to debunk sounds and images and when there's no other plausible explanation, their only conclusion is it's paranormal." Since then, Steve says the paranormal activity has continued in their home. "We're still finding pennies," he says, "and we're still seeing things more peripherally than anything else up on the third floor. And the kids still hear sounds." After all this time, though, the paranormal activity at the Etters home has become, well, almost normal. NO DEMONS : Saturday, June 21, 2008 8:58 AMAlthough Paranormal activity was captured at the Etters home we still belive that it was NOT DEMONS just a traces of energy. So don't worry the family is safe. We plan on returing to Salisbury in the next couple of weeks to visit the Civil War Graveyard and other Historic sites. And will stop by to check on the Etters. Our thank to everyone that has kept up with the story and been so supportive.

Just want someone's or everyone's opinion? : Thursday, June 19, 2008 9:24 PMSay for instance..Something tragic happened in the house. Do you not think that house carries memories? Do you think that the person that this happened to, may want justice? What if someone was murdered in the house and their spirit stays, because they want justice. Once someone knows the truth about the situation. Don't you think the spirit may move on? It could not be a bad spirit or even a "demon". They just want justice and the truth known. Almost like.....A help me situation. Let me rest at last situation. Don't you think this would be possible? Think about it. I do beleive there are things out there, we aren't suppose to understand. In situations like these. They are crying out for help, so they may be at peace. Until someone finds out what happened, they will not be at peace. Not even praying , I don't think will help. If a spirit is there that just can't let go of the location. Yes, you could pray for them and possibly helpt hem to move on. I don't think this is the case of a tragic event.

The Bible will tell you the Truth : Thursday, June 19, 2008 11:56 AMI agree with these people who said that these are demons,if you really want to know the truth read the bible or go on the enternet to bible questions, the only ghost who i beleive in is the Holy Ghost, no im not thinking your crazy and i do beleive those demonds are there and they can oppress and depress you and your family and confuse the children, i am a prayer worrier and people dont realize the power we have with God on our side he gave us the strength wisdom and power to cast out demons, when i moved into my home neighbors told me that 3 family's moved out because their were ghost, little did they know im not a women of fear :) sure enough we heard strange noises,tv turning off and on, window blinds moving and making noise as if someone ran their hands through it there was also a strong smell of mildew,so i called a few prayer worriers and my pastor to come and cast these demons out of my home, they showed up we prayed after that everything was peaceful. i question the neighbors about the family living there before the 3 familys that were scared off, they said they used drugs, listened to heavy medal music and played with the rejii board etc.. my advise to you is to ask a pastor and prayer worriers to pray and chase those demons out of your home meanwhile i will keep you and your family in prayer, god bless you

A brief clarification : Friday, June 13, 2008 8:47 PMI would just like to clarify a point. We are not "ghost busters". It is not our intent to catch, expel, or otherwise interfere with whatever is happening where we are investigating. All we want to do is to go in, see what we can find, and then see if we can explain it. Once we have our footage we leave the location. The only thing we take away is camera and audio footage and occasionally small objects that we suspect may have been affected by whatever was happening. We go over our footage, show what we found to the home owners, and that is it. The most "pay" we have ever had is coffee and donuts, and we have a running joke that our standard fee is a glass of water and a few minutes in the bathroom. I myself can be considered a skeptic because I am constantly trying to come up with explanations for what we find, and I am still coming up with possibilities months after the team has moved on to the next evidence review. To me our evidence is just that. Evidence of what happened that night. Is this particular sound a ghost, demon, or spirit? No, it is a voice that we can't explain. Perhaps later we will discover a reason for that voice. But now the owners know that it is there and they can listen for it. Perhaps thanks to us pointing it out they can discover the truth. That truth could be a ghost, demon, or spirit, or it could just be a fat mouse rubbing against the inside of the wall or the kid next door cranking his video game audio. And that is the fun part for me, finding out what it really was on the audio that night.

: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 3:55 PMDear Casiann, Don't listen to any of the non-believers. I 100% believe that this is happening in your family home. Good luck and take care!
Report AbuseI believe : Tuesday, June 10, 2008 3:11 PM When my family built the first brick house in a county that sits in the foothills, they included a "keyhole" in the chimney to allow the spirits easy passage into and out of the house. There is a church that sits on the land now, and they saved the "key hole" and is sits prominently in the front of their sign at the road. I have also worked at one of what is supposed to be one of the ten most haunted places in NC. This is an institution that part of it served as a hospital during the Civil War, and also had a female student to commit suicide, and that dorm was named after her later. I spent many hours exploring the two oldest buildings, and never a sign of paranormal activity. I have spoken to staff members who have seen them, and they said that they didn't belive until they saw. Maybe my looking for them didn't help my search. Several of my co-workers reported hearing things, especially footsteps and falling objects in a building that they knew to be vacant and locked. I also had friends who lived in a haunted house. The old man fell and died in the bathtub and never left. He would turn on lights in the house, turn off lights when she was in the bathroom, and play other games, but he would not come around the dog. They would hear the dog growl, and then see lights come on on the other side of the closed door. He was a police officer in that town. He would be working and the dog outside, and his wife would be gone to work, and he would come by and lights would be on that were off earlier. For other reasons, he eventually committed suicide, in the same bathtub where the man fell. After that, the family boarded up the house and eventually burned it. But, while it was boarded up, they would find things moved around inside the house, and would also find lights that had been turned on. Just beccause I have never seen one does not convinve me that they do not exsist. I have never knowingly seen God, and I believe in him also.

these ghosts are real : Tuesday, June 10, 2008 2:17 PMI would just like to say that I personally know everyone in the Etter's family. I am one of Dr. Etter's students and have been to his house several times and have witnessed some of the phenomenon that go on in their house. At first, I was skeptical, but after spending time in the house and hearing the stories told countless times and seeing the places where it happened, and one of the ghosts myself, I know that they are real. The Etter's are an extrememly kind, Christian family, and will do anything for people in their community. They would not make this up and people should learn to not judge others and their beliefs and worry about themselves and theirs.

You go Girl : Tuesday, June 10, 2008 1:25 PMCasiann is right. The body is basically a bio-chemical battery. We consume matter and convert into energy. At the time of death part of that energy will move on and the rest can linger around drawing from other sources of energy. Sometimes it just plays over and over like a recording and sometimes it grows strong enough to become self aware. These"ghost" or collections of energy are only trying to be seen or heard. I'll bet if everyone would stop sit still and listen to the they would discover the the world is a wonderful and mysterious place to live. As a foot note the people that say they don't believe in ghost"what about the Holy Ghost"
Report Abuse: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 12:44 PM "Trying to Help" is right. Anyone who is taken in by Satanic spirits masquerading as friendly dead people is allowing their family to be subject to a very dangerous invasion. They have only one purpose in this "realm," and that is to recruit followers of Satan. I'd say get a priest, instead of a group of self-styled "Ghost-Busters" to pray them out in Jesus's name.

The daughter of the Etters Family : Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:54 AMI am Casiann Etters, one of the daughters of the Etters family. I find it very interesting that we have so many reviews of the article. First off, I must announce that none of the members of my family are "tripping on LSD". We have had numerous accounts that cannot be explained of the ghosts that have not been mentioned. Not only has my "crazy family" encountered these experieneces, but friends as well. I completely understand the opposing view of the existance of ghosts because when I first moved into the house I was definitely the same way; however, after multiple events I started to believe. My family is actually very religious and believe that the ghosts are not demons. With the help from the PSI group, we have found that the ghosts deal with more of energy and science than any type of relgious matter. Believe what you want, but we are not crazy and obviously we are not alone. This does not mean that we will die because the ghosts will haunt us forever and kill us, it just means there are spirits in our house. If we have put up with them for seven years and they have not harmed us, well here's to many more!
Report AbuseTrying to Help : Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:56 AM I do believe that what the Etters family is experiencing is real, but I do not believe in ghosts. I am a born-again Christian and truly believe that what they are experiencing are demons disguising themselves as ghosts. Why this house? Demons will enter into homes when occupants participate in activities that God clearly states in his Word are abominations. These activities include seances, fortune-telling, palm reading, tarot card reading, participation in witchcraft, trying to contact the dead, etc. One or more of these activities I"m sure took place with someone who used to live in the house prior to the Etters family. It is contrary to scripture to say that a dead person stays behind. Scripture clearly states that it is appointed for man ONCE to die, then the judgement. Man's soul cannot keep coming and going and have free reign of the afterworld. That is what Satan and his crowd wants you to believe. The enemy knows that people are fascinated with contacting the dead. This is why people like psychic Sylvia Brown are making repeated guests appearances on talk shows and shows like Medium are gaining in popularity. People are eating this stuff up because they can't explain it and they are fooled into believing the appearances are ghosts of people they truly love and miss instead of being demons disguised as those they love and miss. The spirits in the Etters home may represent loved ones from the former residents past that they missed and desperately wanted to contact. I think the fact that Kim Etters tried to call for help with a minister and he told her that "it was not in his league" is sad. What the Etters family needs to do is to call on people they know are truly strong prayer warriors, people who know truly know how to pray and who KNOW scripture and gather them together and pray over that house--every single room and around the outside of the property. All spirits (which these are evil spirits disguising themselves as people from the past)are subject to the blood of Jesus Christ. If they are commanded to leave and never return, they have to obey. That kind of power does not come from the prayer warriors themselves but from the blood of Jesus Christ alone. I wish this family all of the best and pray that their situation is resolved soon so they can truly enjoy their home.

Pennies from Heaven : Tuesday, June 10, 2008 5:38 AMMy son and I also lived in a haunted home, and its so strange that in the beginning we also found pennies everywhere. I am a very neat person, and have never left money laying all over the house, but we would find pennies on the furniture, the floors, in closets, and cupboards, knowing full well we didn't place them there. Our haunting of course took on a more active pace with seeing apparitions, watching things move of their own accord, hearing voices when we were the only two people home, and eventually friends began witnessing paranormal events also. As for the pennies, we did request that the spirits start leaving quarters as well...but I guess they didn't find our request all that tempting. Kept finding pennies.

Ghosts or not, Why not try to make friends with them : Tuesday, June 10, 2008 1:13 AMEvery one always gets freaked out buy things like this, but why not take the time to try to understand the ghosts or what ever they are, not with science, all tho thats important also, but with the heart and sole, try to talk to them like there friends, maybe even make a place for just them, like and empty room, or other empty space, just treat them like people, treat them like you would want to be treated If they are ghosts think what its like to lose every thing, and have no to talk, eat, or interact, in any way It could also be there just lonely

Report AbuseCorrection on Electronic Voice Phenomenon : Monday, June 09, 2008 10:43 PM Kim P.S.I. Genealogist/Historian, then what you caught on your voice recorder wasn't an evp...as EVPs are recordings that are not heard by the human ear when they are made and only show up on a voice recording when no one hears them when they are uttered, that is why they call it an electronic voice phenomenon. What you caught was a disembodied voice. I like what you said when you talked about an investigation is more then just setting up equipment, it is finding out the history of the place, how long has these things been going on, how many generations does this activity go back, and most importantly why is it happening to that specific place, what are the circumstances that may be causing this haunting. A haunting can be very frightening, just having a live person walk up on you without you knowing that someone is there can startle a person into giving out a yelp, imagine the startle you get from the spirit world when you least expect it. I hope the Etters can find some form of relief and come to terms with what is happening in their home. And one last comment for the people who find such things as trivial and make-believe, do yourself a favor, go get a tape recorder and set it up to record throughout the night in your house, do this for a couple of nights in a row..humor yourself and say "If there is anyone who would like to talk please talk to this recorder that I have here so that I may hear you" Then listen to what the recorder has captured...be sure to listen to it with headphones or run it through some software such as Audacity to amplify what is recorded (it's free software just goole it) within a week more then likely you will hear the spirits that are for some reason here...around us....all the time. After all, it says in the Bible that no person goes to heaven when they die...not since Jesus, not until the rapture happens, It says that when we die we wait in purgatory.

Keep an open mind : Monday, June 09, 2008 10:15 PMIf one looks at paranormal activity from a skeptical point-of-view, there will never be enough evidence to prove that ghosts are real. I have had a couple of brushes with the paranormal that taught me not to dismiss people's experiences. Just because we have not experienced what someone else claims to have witnessed does not make the other person a liar. Ghosts and demons are all very real; beware of either, since if they're still hanging around down here, it means they haven't moved on to be with the Lord. I am a Christian and I certainly don't believe in seeking contact with the dead. In the case of people who are dealing with resident spirits, I would say that they should seek a priest or a minister, or (if that doesn't work) simply pray for the spirits of the not-so-departed.

The Etters : Monday, June 09, 2008 9:37 PMI, my family members and friends have all experienced ghosts, along with unexplainable noises in a house in which we lived. Other than that scary and obviously evil presence on the stairs going upstairs, we did not mind it much. It was eerie, of course, but we got used to it and often welcomed the spirits of the dead to communicate with us. Unfortunately the house burned to the ground one day. But we can still go back to the site and hear some of the strange noises, including the shutting of the now nonexistant front door. Kevin is just ignorant of what he has never experienced and closed minded as well. Perhaps he still believes the earth is flat because he hasn't been in space to personally see that it is round as well.

They just seem to want us to know that they are there. I have even discovered a ghost dog at a dorm at the local College here. Its outside by the steps. My grown daughter has seen it too. Its just a normal part of our life. And yes it does scare us sometimes. But we live with it and feel blessed we are able to have these experiences. I agree you need to call Jason And Grant. I have The Holy Ghost in my heart and ghosts in my house!!!! : Sunday, June 08, 2008 7:42 AMIt's funny how religious people can believe in immaculate conception and death with resurrection, yet, can't believe or even fathom the idea that the dead can stay behind. I am a CHRISTIAN and I believe in all the above. My family and close friends know about the paranormal activity that goes on in my home and I have never gone public with the information because of the same narrow and closed minded individuals attacking the Etters now. I believe everything they are seeing and the life altering changes they are experiencing as well. Scientific minds have trouble in completely dispelling the existence of ghosts but religions don't do THEY? So don't call me crazy or tell me I need medication and I won't call you a self righteous Holy Roller. God lives in my heart and in my home. And so does the ghost of a man I call Frank...and a lady I call the lady in white. I will try to contact the PSI team to investigate my home also. We are in the process of remodeling and it seems the more we alter the house the worse things get around here. I think now we have more than we started with but what is one to do? Some say leave, some say call a priest. There is no easy solution so we have just resolved the fact to coexist. HOWEVER, I will say it is still frightening living among the shadows of the past. You never know when you walk into an empty room whether or not Frank will be standing at the kitchen table or the Lady in White will be looking in the mirror reflecting a face that so long ago died. I still wonder why they are trapped here among the living.... I still wonder how they died.

Etters Family and House Full of Ghosts : Saturday, June 07, 2008 12:23 PMI'm glad to see that most of the comments here are positive. To the non-believers...you must not know that this family is a respectable, honest and loving family who wouldn't make up a story like this. Bravo to them for sharing their story and being open to answers for unexplainable experiences. I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to this life than what we can see in physical form. Occasionally, we get the opportunity to glimpse through the veil.
Report Abusesign : Saturday, June 07, 2008 12:20 PM I'd have a "For Sale" sign in the yard! Great story, but not a place I would want to stay or own!! I guess the ghosts are lucky the Etters love them!

Cast out the Demons : Saturday, June 07, 2008 11:00 AMFamilies experiencing weird apparitions and hearing strange voices may benefit more by inviting the "Holy" Ghost into their hearts and homes. And if that doesn't work, I'm told the voices usually go away after a couple weeks on Respiradol.

Haints aint Atwells : Saturday, June 07, 2008 7:24 AMI have researched the family of David and Annie Woodson Atwell, my great great grandparents, who built the house and have a lot of information to share with the current owners if they would like to contact me. A representative of the PSI group did track me down somehow (possibly psychically) and we decided that all us Atwells/Woodsons living and dead have enjoyed such happy and well-adjusted lives that the spooks are unlikely related. The fine old house is quite close to the railroad tracks. When those trains go by I imagine the old frame creaks and rattles, doors and drawers shake open and it gets real creepy. Then the train goes Woo...Woo...Woo, and there you go... I'm sure modern science can't explain a lot of phenomena. First on my list of the unexplained is why people believe in this crap. It is fun though.

With all due Respect : Friday, June 06, 2008 8:26 PMWe have enjoyed traveling all over North & South Carolina Investigating reports of the Paranormal. We welcome all comments on what we do but to say anything as mean as calling people that felt uneasy in their on home"stupid" is wrong. We do what we do only to help people understand what may be going on in their homes and learn not to be afraid. I'm not a rich man all cost for doing this comes out of my pocket. "HELPING PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER COME WITH $$$ SIGNS" What we do is FREE!!!!! to the homeowners so if we are con-artist then we must be the worst in history. LOL. ALWAYS REMEMBER If more people stopped and helped their neighbors to feel better about themselfs and their lives the world would be a better place to live dispite how much gas cost.
Report AbuseTotally true! : Friday, June 06, 2008 4:41 PM I have heard about this house and these stories for many years now. It is completely believable & I feel for this family. And yes, this is such an interesting topic! My guess is that with a little investigating you will find out that PLENTY of old Salisbury homes are housing more than just the owners!
Report AbuseFunny : Friday, June 06, 2008 3:33 PM Well, Kevin, seeing as how you're 51, you must know everything there is to know about everything. And because you have never witnessed a "ghost," that must mean everyone else is "stupid." Stay classy, genius, and have fun being president of the close-minded club.

Not ridiculous : Friday, June 06, 2008 3:21 PMTo the last commenter: If you knew this family, as I do, you would not think that their claims are ridiculous. The fact that YOU, Kevin from Concord, have never witnessed a ghost, does not mean that it's not possible. You are free to disbelieve if you want, but I don't think it's fair to question the truthfulness of the Etters family if you don't know them.

Ridiculous. : Friday, June 06, 2008 11:37 AMI think these people have had a little too much LSD. I am 51 years old, and i have never witnessed a "ghost". Just a moneymaking scheme for those who prey on the stupid. They've seen too many movies. Gasoline jumped 20 cents and crude oil jumped $10 today, June 6. I think we have more in this world to worry about than some made-up story from people with dollars and no sense. Just plain stupid.

Wow : Friday, June 06, 2008 6:12 AMSpooky! I'll bet there's a lot of other paranormal activity in many of the old homes around here. Kathy, I think there's enough for a book if you collected the stories first hand.
