Arts council exhibit

The Rowan Arts Council is exhibiting art work by two members of the board of directors. Alba Gonzalez and Lee Toth have an exhibit of paintings on the North Wall at Rail Walk Studios and Gallery, 409-413 N. Lee Street. The exhibit will hang June 1- July 8.

Showing in the main gallery during the same period will be works by painter Sharon Forthofer.

A reception for both exhibits is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Friday at the studio. The reception is free and open to the public.

Hudson-Tolles opening

Leslie Hudson Holmes is having an open house from 6-9 p.m. Friday to celebrate the opening of Tolholm Studio and Art Classroom. Her studio is located at 6100 Faith Road. Light refreshments will be served.

Hudson-Tolles will be the artist-in-residence at the American Academy of Equine Art at the Kentucky Horse Park July 7-11.

Junk artist

Salisbury "junk" artist John Moorehead will be conducting a children's workshop, followed by a meet-and-greet this Saturday at Wooden Stone.

At the workshop from 10 a.m. to noon, Moorehead will help children make "trash to treasure" artwork for Father's Day. To reserve a space for your child, call 704-212-5243.

A reception will be held noon-2 p.m. for the public to meet and talk to the artist.

Library open house

Center for Faith & the Arts will host an open house on Thursday, June 12 from 3 to 6 p.m. for the public to become familiar with the center's extensive library.

The library is available to anyone who would like to read or do research at the center. It contains works pertaining to the arts, world religions, and the relationship between art and religion.

A listing of the books in the library is available on the internet, accessible through the center's Web site, www.faithart. org.

Piedmont Dance

KANNAPOLIS — On Friday, June 13, Piedmont Dance Theatre presents the first annual "Dancing with the Stars" Benefit Ball at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis.

This sophisticated black tie event will offer delicious cuisine, festive libations and elegant entertainment by world class ballerinas and danseurs.

The event will feature hors d'oeuvres created exclusively for the the ball by Aytek Yildiz. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on unique items during a silent auction. The evening will culminate with dancing to the rhythms of the Salisbury Symphony's Big Band, led by conductor David Hagy.

Sponsorship packages are available to support the non-profit organization. Individual tickets and tables are also available.On June 14 at 7 p.m., Piedmont Dance Theatre will perform George Balanchine's full-length version of "Who Cares?" This fifth-annual outdoor summer concert will feature the world premier of up-and-coming professional choreographer Thang Dao in the Village Park Amphitheater.

This performance features PDT youth ensemble members ages 13 to 17. In addition to the student ensemble, the directors of PDT have arranged for 16 professional dancers to appear.

"Dancing Under the Stars" also offers a series of duets featuring classical, contemporary and modern dance styles, Cogli las Rosa by Sasha James, and Canvas no. 2 created by artistic directors Daniel and Rebecca Wiley. Scruggs induction

WILKESBORO — Earl Scruggs will be honored as a charter inductee in the first annual Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame (BRMHoF) induction ceremony at the Walker Center on the campus of Wilkes Community College Friday, June 13.

Created in 2006, The Blue Ridge Hall of Fame honors musicians who have left a remarkable impact on the heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Self-taught Scruggs developed a now famous, three-finger picking technique. He is known for performing "The Beverly Hillbillies" theme.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and the induction ceremony will start at 8 p.m. There are a limited number of dinner tickets, available at $75, including seats for the ceremony. The induction and concert alone is $25.

Other performers and families to be honored at the concert include Doc Watson, The Carter Family, Dolly Parton, David Johnson, Ralph Rinzler, Ralph Epperson, Wayne Henderson. Mike Cross will host.

PPT set construction

Piedmont Players Theatre will hold set construction for their summer comedy, "Leading Ladies," June 14 from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (lunch provided), Sunday, June 15 from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (lunch provided).

Anyone who wants to become a part of this very important aspect of theatre is welcome. They have many different skill levels, from simple painting and gluing to construction. They will gladly train. For more information, call 704-633-5471.

FAITH — The deadline for entries for the Faith 4th of July Parade is Friday, June 20.

Sonfest

CHARLOTTE — On June 14, Carowinds hosts Sonfest 2008, a day of fellowship, community and live music. The festival will include performances by contemporary Christian artists.

* Hawk Nelson — 4:15 p.m.

* Mark Stewart— 5:30 p.m.
