Post Back: What do you think of Harley-Davidson's new slogan?

The economy may be in the tank, and people may be feeling pessimistic about their future, but Harley-Davidson has a new message for America: "Screw it, let's ride."

That's the iconic American motorcycle manufacturer's new slogan. Created by the Minneapolis ad firm Carmichael Lynch, it replaces the company's previous marketing pitch: "It's not the destination, it's the journey."

Company officials say HD wanted to send an upbeat message. With its U.S.

cycle sales down 13 percent last quarter, it also wanted to send one that might get more people into its showrooms.

You can find out more about the new slogan at:www.harley-davidson.com/screwit.

That Sound Great

H-D Identity Crisis : Monday, May 12, 2008 1:28 PM

Harley Davidson became so squeaky clean during the financial climb up to the summer of 2006, that many folks thought we would be seeing " You Meet The Nicest People " style slogan. Now it seems the Moyor Factory is trying to grasp some footing with the old bad-boy image to bring back the original buying crowd. V-Rod sales should have told marketing what H-D buyers were really interested in.

I think it is fine. It brings up a good point...in the long-run does it really matter? Sure we're in a recession, but we've been there before. Personally, I don't own a HD, or any other one for that matter, but think it is a good company and being bold (such as this ad) can be good at times.

Love Harleys, hate the slogan : Monday, May 12, 2008 9:44 AM

I really appreciate Harley Davidsons but once again they seem to be appealing to the lowest common denominator. I think it's a great idea to encourage people to get out and ride. They are right in that riding a motorcycle can be a great source of enjoyment and relief. The more they seem to be willing to create a "bad" attitude for their culture the less I am inclined to recommend "Harley Davidson" to my children. It's sad because I really think the bikes are top notch. Come'on Harley grow up.

I like the new slogan. Hasn't that always been the attitude of motorcycle riders anyway? Harley has just finally put it on a poster. The phrase "screw it" is really not what I would consider offensive. Plus, I think the motorcycle culture has been "coarsened" way beyond that for years and the rest of society knows it. That's part of the appeal of the Harley lifestyle.

perfect for HD : Sunday, May 11, 2008 6:57 PM

it reflects the "bad-a$$" type of lifestyle of the HD.and the slogan "screw it.lets ride" is perfect for the state our world is in.(esp. the economy) sometimes you just gotta say screw it.

It's rude : Sunday, May 11, 2008 11:30 AM

I take issue with the previous poster's statement that only prudes would be concerned with the general coarsening of our culture, as exemplified by Harley's new rude slogan. I also take issue with him charactizing anyone expressing an opinion on the slogan's inappropriateness as "bitching"--an inflammatory and unnecessary word choice in this forum. I wonder if this poster even understands the origins of this phrase? And as far as worrying about the public schools, maybe he should be less worried about the Pledge of Allegiance (a non-issue if ever there was one) than about our kids learning how to write correctly. Obviously, the public schools failed him, as evidenced by not one but two apostrophe errors in his first sentence (it's "hits the nail on its head," not "hit's the nail on it's head"). But at least he's happy on his Harley.

screw it lets ride : Sunday, May 11, 2008 7:45 AM

Reminds me of the sixtys ----people did not fall into the lifestyle trap society had planned for them ---------they (including me) grew up (bought harleys) and know the world will go on -----enjoy the ride where ever you and it won't be so crowded----buy some harley stock now and enjoy the ride-------------screw it lets ride

A long time Harley rider
Lost : Sunday, May 11, 2008 7:27 AM

H-D has left behind it's hardcore following in favor of "pc" riders. Lots of bikes are sitting in garages as eye-candy only........the motor company is getting what it deserves.

Dead-On Right! Harley hit's the nail on it's head... : Saturday, May 10, 2008 3:09 PM

The message to me says; "screw the talking heads preaching fear; screw the naysayers with their doom and gloom, we've (Harley) seen all this before and we'll see it again and we'll get through it now as we have before. In essence, don't sweat it; get out there and ride. For those that do ride you know how relaxing a 45 minute put on a bike can be and Harley's trying to remind us of that. Life's short and we need to savor the enjoyments we can. Plus, with 45 MPG I'd say a nice little putt on a h Harley even conserves ennergy. As for the objections to "screw it;" I just don't know where these prudes come from; instead of bitching about that language (which is rather mundane in the greater scheme of things) they should be more concerned about our schools not be allowed to have a rule that kids stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

I agree : Friday, May 09, 2008 9:41 PM

I do not like this slogan. I think that it is tacky. Personally, it would not get me into their showrooms to look at anything. I love to ride and prefer to ride a Harley but I think that this could have been done with a little more taste.

A Harley Rider
Tacky : Friday, May 09, 2008 12:44 PM

I think it could've been put in a little nicer language & still been upbeat. The world is in a negative enough shape w/out "screw it" being used so often. I like Harley's but personally think the msg is tacky and immature.
