UDC luncheon

The Robert F. Hoke Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held its Lee-Jackson-Maury luncheon at the Rowan Public Library on Jan. 27, marking the 20th anniversary for this luncheon which was first held in January of 1992.

President Trudy Hall began the remembrance by having the assembly sing happy birthday to Matthew Fontaine Maury, born Jan. 14, 1806; Robert Edward Lee, born Jan. 19, 1807 and Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, born Jan. 21, 1824. Nancy Sloop accompanied on the keyboard.

Sandra Boyer read a prayer used daily by Commodore Maury for 34 years as the invocation and Dianne Hall read the poem “Birthdays of Lee and Jackson.”

Past president Sue Curtis told about the hen that provided eggs for General Lee for more than a year during the War Between the States, before meeting an untimely death by being eaten. It is believed that General Jackson was fond of lemons and Commodore Maury is known for charting the ocean currents.

Vice president Barbara Upright introduced speaker Karen McConnell, who spoke on General Lee and his connection with the 57th Troops who served from the Rowan County area.

Debbie Suggs catered the luncheon which included chicken, lemons and salts representing the men being remembered. Theme-related door prizes were awarded. Barbara Upright gave the benediction.

Chapter members, guests and spouses from Lexington, Greensboro, Graham, Charlotte, Concord, Mooresville and Newton joined the Hoke Chapter in a day of fun and fellowship. Guests were provided with souvenir programs and placemats.

Woman’s Club

Local author Cathy Cress Eller advocated a follow-your-passion approach to life at the February Woman’s Club meeting, in keeping with the theme of “Literacy: Adventure of a Lifetime.” Eller is the author of children’s books that personify the bug world to tell stories showing kindness is contagious, working together can make someone’s life a little better, we can use help from someone bigger than ourselves, and it takes a friend to help us look inside ourselves to discover our gifts and talents.

Ann Bingham spoke on the Biblical view of marriage.

President Angelia Bates presided at the business meeting where new projects were discussed and plans made to submit favorite recipes for the national magazine.

Hostesses Rose Ward and Ann Bingham decorated the club house with a valentine theme for the luncheon catered by Trinity Oaks.
