LANDIS — The second annual Open Door Free Store is Sunday, Feb. 12 from noon-2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Building at 209 E. Mill St. (just behind the post office).

Free clothing will be distributed, no maximums, no requirements. For more information call the pastor, Bev Coppley, at 704-932-5330.

Coburn Scout Sunday

Scouts are in charge of the Scout Sunday service on Feb. 12 at Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 S. Church St., at the 8:50 a.m service.

Spencer Dixon is in charge of the Scout’s participation and has assigned the following to take part: Joshua Billingslea, Mark Eagle, Sabrinah Hartsell, Jack Kepley, Dylan Morgan, Zach Oster, Jaden Robertson and Kayla Taylor.

Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall after the service.

Mission 217

KANNAPOLIS — Mission 217, whose goal is “bringing people back to life,” celebrates its first anniversary at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12. There will be only one service that day, which is also the kick-off a new teaching series called “Real Marriage.”

Mission 217 also partners with local organizations such as Shadybrook Elementary School to raise money and volunteer.

Soldiers Memorial

Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church will hold its annual Livingstone College Day celebration on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. during the morning worship service.

The Livingstone College Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. D. Vaughn Miller, will provide music for the occasion. Dr. Jimmy Jenkins, president of the college, and the Rev. Dr. William Simmons , president of the National Alumni Association, will be present to bring greetings.

The faculty and staff of Livingstone College are invited to attend as well as the general public.

The Rev. Dr. Grant Harrison is pastor of Soldiers Memorial, located at 306 N Church St.

New Beginning Church

CONCORD — On Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m., New Beginning presents in concert the Caldwell Chapel Mass Choir of Mt. Mourne, and P3 Ministries of Mooresville.

Deacons Alliance

The Rowan and Davie County Deacons Alliance Inc., will celebrate its 23rd anniversary and revival the week of Feb. 12-17.

On Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, the Rev. William Cowan of New Bethel Baptist Church of Mocksville will speak. The Rev. David Bracken is host pastor.

Revival services will be held at the Solid Rock Church of God where the Rev. Samuel Washington is pastor. All services begin at 7 p.m.

Speakers for the revival are: Monday, the Rev. Clarence Marlin of Fairview Baptist; Tuesday, the Rev. Patrick Jones, associate minister of New Zion Baptist; Wednesday, the Rev. Ricky Johnson, pastor of Antioch Baptist; Thursday, Evangelist Diane Roberts of Mount Calvary Holy Church; Friday, the Rev. Samuel Washington, pastor of Solid Rock Church of God.

Clarence Craig is president of the Alliance, James Staley is secretary.

New Creation Baptist

STATESVILLE — New Creation Baptist Church will celebrate the fifth anniversary of their pastor, the Rev. Joseph Robinson and First Lady Mary Robinson, on Sunday, February 12 at 4 p.m.

The speaker will be the Rev. Todd French from Tynes Chapel AME Zion Church of Rocky Gap, Va. Dinner will be served.

The celebration will be held at the Statesville Civic Center, 300 S. Center St. Call Evangelist Watkins at 704-873-1948 with questions.

St. Matthew’s

St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church will hold their monthly second Sunday singing at 6 p.m. on Feb. 12. The Director’s Trio from Burlington will perform at this singing. Renee Tolley Page, originally from Rockwell, Kevin Smith and Minone Frizzelle make up the trio, which sings a mixture of southern gospel, traditional and soul.

St. Matthew’s is located at 9275 Bringle Ferry Road .

‘Courageous’ to show

The movie “Courageous” will be shown on Saturday, February 18 at 6 p.m. at North Main Baptist Church, 1501 N. Main St. Call 704-637-2929 for free tickets.

Antique appraisals raise funds for organ

First United Church of Christ will host an antique appraisal event, open to the public, on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An admission fee of $10 per item will be charged.

The appraisals will be conducted by Dennis White, a well-known collector of antiques and a licensed auctioneer who operates an antique store in Mooresville. As he conducts individual appraisals, participants may sit around tables and enjoy complimentary light refreshments provided by the women of the church.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the organ fund at the church. Recently the church council approved the purchase of a Rodgers organ with eleven ranks of Raffati pipes. The recently installed pipes for this organ were manufactured in Italy. A great deal of renovation of the sanctuary was required to install the organ and pipes.

First United Church of Christ is located at 297 W. Horah St., and the entrance to the fellowship hall is located off of Monroe St. There is plenty of parking and no steps to negotiate.

Parenting Academy

KANNAPOLIS — The First Presbyterian Church is launching a Parenting Academy this week, open to all parents. These semi-monthly evening sessions will address topics of interest to parents, with each session moderated by a veteran parent or couple.

The first session is Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 6:30 p.m., on “Modeling Love for the ‘Least of These,’ ” led by Kris Edscorn, Director of Ministries. This session will help parents to raise families that “seek justice and love mercy” and to love all their neighbors.

The one-hour sessions are free of charge. Some study materials may be provided. The emphasis will be positive and practical. Parents will be encouraged to share their own strategies that work.

Nursery will be provided for children two and under, and Discovery Club for children age three through 5th grade. A supper is served between 5:45 and 6:15 at a modest charge.

Upcoming sessions include “Learning to Listen to Your Teen,” Feb. 29; and “Teaching Your Child About the Bible,” March 14.
