If you live in an urban area and want to raise chickens, you will need to look into whether or not your particular city allows it.

The city of Salisbury does not prohibit citizens from raising chickens:

From Sec. 5-1:It shall be unlawful for any person to permit any chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese or guineas to run at large or to stray upon the premises of any other person without first obtaining permission in writing of the person in charge of such premises.

Sec. 5-2. - Maintenance of pens, lots, etc.

Every person who owns or maintains any pen, lot, shelter or other place where any animals are kept shall maintain the place in a sanitary manner and in a humane manner.

Note: Your subdivision may have restrictive covenants that prohibit the raising of animals considered to be livestock, including chickens.
