It is getting close! I love outdoor track and field!
The Salisbury Speedsters is now a YMCA program and I have had lots of inquiries about what competitive track and field entails.
Tonight at 6 p.m. there will be a parent/athlete interest and informational meeting in the boardroom of the JF Hurley Family YMCA. Anyone interested is welcome. But for the ones who are not able to attend or just want some information now, here you go:
Our track and field club focuses on the development of track and field athletes 6-18 years old. If you and your child are interested in joining our track team and sign up this week we start conditioning this Tuesday and Thursday 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the JF Hurley Family YMCA. Outdoor season practice starts on March 12 at Salisbury High School Track. We practice three times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7:30 p.m. Starting cost is $200 for a new athlete; which includes an AAU card, USATF card, $100 club fees and uniform fees (two tops and one bottom). Other cost will be travel fees, entry fees from $3-$10 for most meets, to $25-$40 for State, Regional and Nationals when they qualify. And hotel costs since we are a traveling team. Most meets are within driving distance. AAU Nationals this year are in Houston, Texas, and USATF Nationals are in Baltimore, Maryland. We have fundraisers to offset some of the cost.
The first part of the season is mainly about conditioning and getting the body ready for more. Closer to the first meet, we start running faster and do lots of intervals and work on techniques. Depends what your child is going to run or throw, there is a difference between our sprint workouts, 100 and 200M, 400 and mid-distance workouts, 800M, 1500M, 3000M, and again different with field events (discus, shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump etc). Our coaches are among the best in the field. We are all about the development of the young athlete. Whatever talent they have, we look at the big picture and strive to treat each child with the same care, whatever their talent may be. We want them to run in high school and college, too. If you push a young child too much and work their bodies too hard, they will get hurt or get burned out and give up a sport they once loved and are talented in. Most importantly, we want them to have fun, learn and work hard, and build wonderful relationships with team members and other athletes. We make sure not to over train our athletes and encourage them to constantly communicate with us. AAU/ USA Track and Field is a competitive sport and not everyone is a winner. Our number one priority is to improve your child on whatever level they may be. With the focus on development, fundamentals and enjoyment of track and field, our athletes put out a great effort and enjoy wonderful results. As our records show, we are a small team but last year we broke records, had State and Regional Champs and All Americans. Salisbury Speedsters Y run in both AAU and USATF sanctioned events. Competing in both organizations gives our athletes more exposure and different kids to compete against. So when you join us, expect high quality coaching, a wholesome Christian atmosphere, true team spirit and very dedicated children and parents. Expect your meet season to be from the end of April to the first week in August and to be at a meet most Saturdays from early in the morning (about 8 a.m.) to at least 5 p.m. or later. Regional and National Championships can be up to a week long. We bring popup canopies for shade and coolers with healthy food and drinks. Expect you and your child to make new friends. Expect your child to become a respectful winner and learn to deal with and accept defeats. They learn to look at the big picture to be excited when they improve their personal best times even if they did not medal. This is my 4th season and each year my experience exceeded all my expectations. I am excited to start this season. For more information you can come tonight to the meeting or call head coach Tim Dunlap at 704-754-2595 or me, Ester Marsh, at the YMCA 704-636-0111 ext 212. Salisbury Speedsters Y is a team of dedicated coaches, supportive parents and terrific kids that make this an exceptional Track and Field club I am proud to call “my team.”
