Catawba Community Music fall schedule

The Catawba College Community Music program is offering a variety of class offerings for the fall semester.

Private instruction (30-, 45- or 60-minute private lessons) is offered for students of all ages and levels of ability on the following instruments: piano, voice, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, violin, viola, cello, percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, and trombone.

Group lessons

Musikgarten (Birth–Age 5) — Parents can participate with their child in singing, chanting, moving, dancing, listening, and playing simple instruments.

Tuesdays 2:30-3 p.m.; Thursdays 6-6:30pm (pajama class). Instructor, Erin Harper. Classes begin week of September 13th.

Pre-Piano Class — Designed to introduce young children (ages 4-5) to the elements of music while learning about the unique qualities of the piano, this class is a creative bridge[0xa0]to the reading of music notation[0xa0]with music meaning. Activities that include moving, singing, creating, listening, and playing keyboard and rhythm instruments. This two-semester course meets once a week and serves as an appropriate introduction to the more formal study of piano and/or other instruments. Meets 30 minutes per week for 15 weeks each semester. Minimum Enrollment to offer class: 4.

Monday, 5:30-6 p.m. or Thursday 3:30-4 p.m., Instructor, Erin Harper.

Class Piano for Children — Based on an active learning approach, musical concepts come alive as students learn and work together in a supportive group environment. Activities at the keyboard and musical games in theory make this class ideal for the beginning pianist. Classes have limited enrollment and meet 50 minutes per week. Separate sessions are offered for children and adults. All classes meet one hour per week for 15 weeks each semester, Instructors, Erin Harper. (Class Piano I for ages 6 and 7 offered on Mondays from 3-3:50; Tuesdays from 4-4:50.)

Catawba Children’s Chorale (ages 7-14) Designed to provide opportunities for students to learn the fundamentals of good singing and musicianship, as well as to develop poise, confidence and good stage presence. Performance opportunities at community events and Catawba Community Music concerts. Directed by Mrs. Randi Skaggs, the ensemble meets one hour per week for the15-week session. By audition only at first class.

Classes begin the week of Sept. 13 and meet Thursdays 4-5 p.m. in the Hoke Building, Catawba College. Scholarships are available as well as payment plans.

Catawba Youth Chorale (grades 9-12)— Performance opportunities include singing at varied community events, schools and Catawba Community Music concerts. Under the direction of Dean Orbison, high school students will learn a wide variety of repertoire and develop their vocal and performance abilities. By audition only, the ensemble meets 90 minutes each week.

Weekly rehearsals will be held Tuesdays 7-8:30 p.m. beginning the week of September 13. Auditions will be held during the first class. Scholarships are available as well as payment plans.

Broadway Singing (grades 6-12) — Learning the correct vocal techniques to improve your voice and range is our goal.[0xa0] Elements such as proper breathing technique, posture, breath control, note recognition, note values, working on songs and self confidence are just some important results to be gained.[0xa0] Repertoire will be Broadway selections. Class time; Thursdays 4:10-5 p.m. Instructor, Corey Cellularle and Mara Stewart.

Class Voice for Pre-Teens and Teens — An introduction to the mysteries of skillful and joyful singing in a supportive and friendly group environment.

Wednesdays 5-5:50 p.m. Instructors, Jennifer Drake and Matt Newton.

Class Flute (ages 13-18). This technique and tone building class will provide basic flute playing knowledge augmenting what students learn in their school band class. This is a great foundation class and will expose students to what private lessons may provide for them in the future. Be amazed at your flutist’s progress when you see them perform at the end of each semester.

Thursdays 4-4:50 p.m. Instructor, Jack Murray.

Class Guitar — Beginners and Intermediate. For teen and pre-teen students who are beginning or continuing on acoustic or electric guitar. Students learn basic chords, notation, and guitar tablature, with a special emphasis on learning popular songs chosen by the class and the instructor. Instructor, David Edwards (also teaches privately). All guitar classes on Mondays: Young Beginners at 4-4:50 p.m. Adult Beginners at 5-5:50 p.m. Introduction to Blues at 6-6:50 p.m.

Introduction to Music Recording (ages 13-18). This course is designed for students with an understanding and appreciation of music and demonstrated desire to learn the techniques of recording. Classes will include lecture and hands-on practical experience.

Tuesdays 4:30-5:20 p.m. Instructor, Chris Williams.

How to Audition Workshops (ages 12 and up). Students work on the interpretation, acting, and delivery of a song.

August 24 and 26 from 5:30-7:20 p.m.; Sept. 11 and 18 from 10-11:20 a.m. Instructor, Missy Barnes.

Music and Movement (all ages and learning abilities) — Helps foster growth and development in all children, including those facing the challenges of autism, Down syndrome, physical handicaps and language and social delays.

Thursdays 9:30-10:20 a.m.; Instructor, Missy Barnes; private lessons with Laura Barker.

Class Suzuki Violin (ages 6 and up) Includes parent involvement.

Classes on Thursdays from 4-4:50 p.m. Instructor, Dr. Dan Skidmore.
