A Kannapolis man is serving a 14-day sentence in the Rowan County jail after showing up drunk to a child support hearing Tuesday, according to court records.
Jason Michael Sides, of 704 Evelyn Ave., had mumbled speech and was non-responsive to the court’s pretrial questions, according to the court records. A bailiff administered a breath-alcohol test and Sides blew a 0.17 at 10:30 a.m.
Sides told the court that he had drunk “a couple of beers the night before court,” and that he was not intoxicated, the records stated.
Sides was in court Tuesday morning in hopes of having his child support obligation terminated since he now has physical custody of his son. The motion to terminate child support included a safety assessment contract signed by Sides that stated he would not possess any alcohol and remain alcohol and drug free while maintaining custody of his son.
Fourteen days in jail was for “disruption of the court’s proceedings due to the defendant’s appreciable impairment.”
Sides is scheduled to be back in court Oct. 19.
