A Salisbury man injured in a Tuesday morning wreck on Mooresville Road died later that day, hospital officials said.
Authorities say alcohol was a factor in the crash and that a medical condition might have contributed as well.
Laddie Richard Bohacek, 71, of 775 Barnhardt Road, ran off the road in his Ford F-250, hit a ditch and overturned several times around 11:15 a.m., N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper D.R. Morgan said Tuesday.
Morgan said Bohacek's blood sugar level was low and that he may have had a medical condition, but that hasn't been confirmed.
Alcohol was involved in the wreck, Morgan said. Beer was found at the crash site.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The cab of Bohacek's pickup was crushed. He had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.
Bohacek was taken from the scene to Rowan Regional Medical Center and later flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He had a head injury and cuts to his face.
The truck came to rest on its wheels in a field across from a home at 5714 Mooresville Road. Homeowner Jennifer Carter heard the crash and called 911.
When she went to the truck to see if the occupant was OK, Carter said, she smelled alcohol, but could not be certain if the odor was coming from the driver or beer that had spilled on the side of the road.
A 12-pack and a single unopened can of beer lay on the side of the road. Emergency personnel picked up several items that fell out of the truck, including money and papers.
Toxicology reports are not available yet, Morgan said.
