CHINA GROVE — Police are searching for a 19-year-old man wanted for attempted murder in a shooting Sunday night.
Police have identified the shooter as Dustin Reid Hinson, 19, of 225 Shue Road, and consider him armed and dangerous.
The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. at an apartment complex at 214 Old Rockwell Road, off North Main Street.
China Grove Police Chief Eddie Kluttz said police responded to a call and found Garrett Lane Wilhelm, 19, shot once in the lower extremities and bleeding severely.
He was taken by Rowan EMS to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Kluttz said the bullet struck Wilhelm's femoral artery and caused extensive bleeding.
Officers worked through the night to obtain a description of the shooter and located evidence that led to the identification of Hinson as the suspect.
Police obtained a warrant early today charging Hinson with attempted murder.
Police believe the shooting is related to a domestic incident. Wilhelm was visiting someone at the apartment complex.
China Grove Police got assistance from the Landis Police Department and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, including Rowan Sheriff George Wilhelm, who searched the Shue Road residence.
Authorities ask anyone with information regarding Hinson's whereabouts to immediately call 911.
Anyone with information related to the investigation can contact Cpl. D. Walther with the China Grove Police Department at 704-857-7755.
