Kannapolis Council to discuss water

KANNAPOLIS — Kannapolis City Council will vote Monday night on the first phase of the Albemarle Water Line Project, a $19.7 million plan to meet the future water needs of Kannapolis and Concord.

Council meets at 6 p.m. at the train station.

Council will consider paying $539,560 for Phase I of the project, which includes engineering and environmental work by W.K. Dickson. The total project cost to Kannapolis is $7,410,024. Concord and Albemarle would pay the balance.

The project proposes the construction of about 87,500 feet of 30-inch water line paralleling N.C. Highway 49 from Main Street in Richfield to the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center on Old Airport Road.

A portion of the water line will be constructed along Fisher Road, Moose Road and N.C. Highway 73.

The proposed line has the capability of transferring 10 million gallons per day from the Catawba River as allowed by the Concord-Kannapolis Interbasin Transfer Certificate.

Also Monday night, council members will take the oath of office and elect a mayor pro tem. Citizens may speak at the end of the meeting for up to three minutes each.
