China Grove town board to give students peek at local government

CHINA GROVE — Students at Carson High School will soon learn about how local government really works via a cell phone call from the China Grove town board.

During a recent meeting, Amie Furr, a 10th grade civics teacher, asked the board to speak to her class via cell phone conference call.

According to Town Manager Bill Pless, members of the board will talk to the class Thursday to describe what goes on in town business on a daily basis.

Furr runs a 21st Century classroom, which includes integrating classroom instruction through the use of technology.

Each school in the system has one teacher who is a 21st Century classroom teacher.

The board and town staff will also visit the class on Friday along with the Rowan-Salisbury School System's Superintendent Dr. Judy Grissom, members of the Board of Education, local business leaders and a representative from Apple computers.

In other business, the board also received five options for recycling from Public Works Director David Ketner. The board narrowed its options to three. The options are:

- A centralized drop-site in town where the staff monitors and collects the materials.

- A contract with a raw material collector, Sonoco, to set up a central site.

- Allow private recycling companies to compete for clients in the town at the citizen's expense.

Pless said the town staff hopes to have options at the next meeting.

Mayor Don Bringle thanked interim Police Chief Brett Bass for his service. The town recently hired China Grove native Eddie Kluttz as its new chief. Kluttz will begin as chief Nov. 25.
