In unofficial results, voters approve sales tax increase

In Rowan County's Board of Elections unofficial results, voters have approved a 1/4 cent sales tax with 5,263 favoring the tax increase and 4,283 opposed.

With 15 of 15 precincts reporting in the race for five Salisbury City Council seats, incumbent Mayor Susan Kluttz has unofficially won the race for mayor of Salisbury  with 2,365 votes.

Challenger Maggie Blackwell came in second with 1,924 votes.

William "Pete" Kennedy took the fifth and final council seat leaving incumbent Mark Lewis off of the Salisbury city council.

John I. Steele Jr. has won the mayor's race in Cleveland, in unofficial results.

For Cleveland's town board, incumbents Danny Gabriel and Pat Phifer are joined by newcomer Travis Summitt.

In East Spencer, John Cowan has won the Mayoral race.

According to the Board of Elections, turnout has exceeded expectations and appears to be over 10-percent.

Bob Misenheimer has been re-elected mayor of Kannapolis and all three incumbents for city council will also retain their positions.

Spencer Mayor Jody Everhart has won re-election over challenger Jon Palmer.

In the East Spencer Board of Alderman race John L. Rustin Sr. has lost his seat.  Voters re-elected Phronice Johnson to the board along with newcomers Tammy L. Corpening and Rosa Burris.

In China Grove Butch Bivens, the only incumbent running for Board of Alderman has lost his bid for re-election. Brandon Linn, Charles Seaford and Mike Upright have been elected.

Faith voters returned all the board's incumbents except Maxey Sanderson. Keith Deal, a first time candidate, will replace Sanderson.

In Landis, incumbents James Furr and Craig Sloop won new terms on the board.

In Rockwell, newcomers Justin Crews and Eric Moore joined incumbents Chuck Bowman, Tim Draper and Chuck Wingerson. Incumbent Bill Ridenhour lost his seat.

Spencer voters elected Scott Benfield, Jeff Morris, Donnie Hinson, Reid Walters Delaine Fowler and Tracy Aitken to their board.
