Church briefs - Ursinus United Church of Christ celebrating homecoming Sunday

The congregation of Ursinus United Church of Christ, 118 W. Main St., Rockwell, will celebrate homecoming Sunday at 11 a.m.

The service will include a time of remembrance, noting the charter members of the 1899 church that began it all, and the members of Ursinus who have joined the Church Triumphant in the past year.

The special speaker for this celebration will be Dr. Christine Teague, a daughter of Ursinus UCC and presently infectious diseases clinical pharmacy specialist and Ryan White Part C program director at Charleston Area Medical Center (CMAC) in West Virginia.

Teague is the daughter of Shearin and Ann Teague of Rockwell and granddaughter of Faye Teague of Landis. She was a 1991 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy. She earned a doctor of pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia, completed a residency in infectious diseases phamacotherapy from the University of Rhode Island, and a master of public health degree from West Virginia University.

She is a member of the West Virginia ADAP Committee, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the HIV Medicine Association. She has given numerous invited lectures on HIV and infectious diseases around the country; has published 25 peer-reviewed articles and letters over the last 10 years; and written grants for HIV work at CMAC totaling over $3.5 million.

Following the worship service, there will be a covered-dish luncheon in the fellowship hall. Friends and visitors are welcome.

Christ UMC

Homecoming at Christ United Methodist Church will be observed Sunday. The Rev. Randy Foster will be the guest speaker. He served at Christ UMC from 1992-1998.

Contemporary service will be at 8:30 a.m. with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. Blended worship service will be at 11 a.m.

There will be a fellowship time following the 11 a.m. service, with a covered-dish lunch "on the grounds." The public is invited.

Christ UMC is located at 3401 Mooresville Road.

Yadkin Baptist

SPENCER — Yadkin Missionary Baptist Church is holding revival services 7 p.m. nightly Nov. 2-5. The guest speaker is Dr. Andrew J. Royals.

Royals earned his bachelor of arts and master of education degrees from UNC at Greensboro and master's and doctorate of ministry degrees from Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, Fla.

He has served as a teacher and coach in high schools in both Davie and Davidson counties.

The public is invited to revival services.

Mount Zion youth

The GGEO Youth Ministries of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Salisbury Inc. is celebrating "4 Dayz of Praize" at the Worship and Ministry Center, 1920 Shirley Ave.

The festivities began with a Hallelujah Night Praise Party for Jesus on Oct. 31.

The celebration continues today with a Liturgical Extravaganza at 3 p.m., which will feature dance groups, step teams, mime ministries and creative expressions from area churches and ministries. The event is open to the public.

A youth revival will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. Music Ministries and Creative Expression Ministries will lead the worship. The service will feature the initial sermon by Tiffany Miller, who serves as a youth minister and adviser, creative expressions coordinator, music ministry team, Bible and youth studies teacher and member of the Youth Advisory Council at Mount Zion. She is the daughter of the Rev. Jerry and the Rev. Lovetta Miller, associate ministers at Mount Zion.

The "4 Dayz of Praize" will conclude Wednesday with the kickoff of the monthly Hour of Power at 7 p.m. The Rev. Thomas Wyatt, pastor of Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ, Spencer, will be the messenger. The worship will include the youth praise team and youth choir of Dorsett Chapel.

The Rev. Nilous M. Avery II is host pastor.

Hot dog roast

KANNAPOLIS — First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis invites the community to an outdoor hot dog roast in the empty lot behind the church Sunday.

Activities begin at 4 p.m. and include pony rides, a moonwalk inflatable play area, pumpkin decorating, face painting, a hay ride, and games for older children and teens.

An informal worship service around the fire will conclude the evening around 6 p.m.

The Kannapolis Fire Department and Police Department will provide vehicles for children to inspect. Hot dogs and all the trimmings will be provided, along with marshmallows at 4:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and roasting sticks. A grill also will be provided for those who do not wish to roast their hot dogs over the fire. Meat-free hot dogs also will be available.

Maranatha Bible George Schultz will be the keynote speaker for Maranatha Bible Church's Missions Sunday at 10 a.m. He is director of the Center for Intercultural Training located in Union Mills.

CIT, which started with one student in 1989, helps train and equip missionaries and other Christian professionals for cross-cultural living and ministry. Due to the high attrition of first-term missionaries, CIT strives to meet the emotional, spiritual and family needs of their students so they will not only survive in a cross-cultural setting, but will truly thrive in a different cultural environment.

The Schultz family served in the field in missions from 1980 to 1994 in Canada, Alaska and Russia. George did demographic and receptivity survey work in Minnesota, Ontario and Manitoba, was a teacher and later director of the Arctic Bible Institute, did church planting in an Athabascan Indian village in Alaska, served as the director of the Missionary Training Outreach (summer missionary program), and held leadership positions as Alaska field director, director of Siberian ministries and Russian field director. His wife, Kathy, has served faithfully as a counselor, cook, church planter, Bible teacher, field bookkeeper and in other roles.

Since 1995, George and Kathy have served at the Center for Intercultural Training, a pre-field missionary training program in North Carolina. George currently serves as the director, one of the trainers, and partnership facilitator. The CIT program now services a partnership for the training of missionaries from 16 mission agencies and churches. Kathy leads the Kids Intercultural Training (KIT) program designed to help prepare the children/teens for missionary and cross-cultural life.

- 9 a.m. Sunday school: combined adult classes with West Rowan Bible Teaching Association and a DVD presentation on the work of Wycliffe Bible Translators in Senegal, where Jim and Petey Winters are serving; Youth Missions Emphasis Class with Anna Linhart; and Children's Missions Emphasis Class with MBC member, Sucy deLeon.

- 10 a.m. worship service: Keynote speaker — George Schultz with the Center for Intercultural Training in Rutherfordton; PowerPoint presentation of work of Darrell and Ruth Racey in Mideast; and children's church with Rhonda Emberson, Wycliffe Bible Translators;

- 11:30 a.m. covered dish dinner. Those attending are asked to bring enough food and drink for their family and a few others as well.

- 6 p.m. worship service: keynote speaker — Dwayne Emberson of Wycliffe Bible Translators; Nathaniel and Gwen Holliman with Child Evangelism Fellowship; and a program for the children.

Harvest Festival

CHINA GROVE — China Grove Church of God, 413 N. Franklin St., is holding a Harvest Festival, featuring a craft and bake sale, next Saturday, Nov. 8.

The breakfast and craft and bake sale begins at 8 a.m. Silent auction items will be on display 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A live auction will take place at 5 p.m.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a barbecue pork or chicken dinner available, including slaw, baked beans and dinner rolls. The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under.

Cedar Grove AME ZionCLEVELAND — Cedar Grove AME Zion Church, Cleveland, will celebrate its YAMS Anniversary Observance Sunday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m.

The speaker delivering the message is Janice Spearman, the first lady of Clinton Tabernacle AME Zion Church and the wife of the Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman.

The pastor is the Rev. Dr. Patricia A. Tyson, Missionary Parent Body president is Dianne Williams and YAMS coordinator is Margaret Ellis.

New Shepherd

COOLEEMEE — New Shepherd Baptist Church, 108 Wall St., Cooleemee, will be celebrating the 18th pastoral anniversary of the Rev. Melvin E. Kesler, Sunday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. Lunch will be served at 1:30 p.m.

The Rev. Erwin Baker, pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Cooleemee, and his congregation will be in charge of the services.

The public is invited.

Parker Memorial

RICHFIELD — Parker Memorial Baptist Church will be holding Youth Sunday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m.

The church is located on Parker Memorial Road in Richfield. All are welcome.

A special youth choir, and 4ever 4given, will be singing. Parker's Youth leader Shellem Cline will be bringing the message.
