Hagan protests 'Godless Americans' ad

An angry Kay Hagan said today she was “appalled at the vile tactics” behind the “Godless American” television ad that Republican rival Elizabeth Dole began running against her last night.

Hagan called it politics of the worst kind and “so unbecoming of a woman like Elizabeth Dole.

“How dare she attack my Christian faith,” Hagan told reporters during a noon conference call. Hagan spoke as she was traveling to the General Baptist Convention in Fayetteville.

Earlier in the day, she held a press conference at First Presbyterian Church, where she is an elder, has taught Sunday School and has accompanied youth mission trips.

The Hagan campaign has said it will seek a cease-and-desist order against the ad, which links Hagan to supporters of the Godless Americans Political Action Committee.

“Is Elizabeth Dole that desperate to keep this Senate seat?” Hagan asked.

A spokesman for the Dole campaign said everything about the ad is accurate and the senator has no intention of pulling it from the airwaves.

Hagan attended a Democratic fundraiser in September that was held in the Boston home of author Wendy Kaminer and her husband, Woody Kaplan, who belongs to the advisory board of the Godless Americans PAC.

The couple also are advisory board members of the Secular Coalition for America.

The fundraiser was organized by the Democratic group ActBlue. Hagan said some 40 people attended the fundraiser, including U.S. Sen. John Kerry and an ambassador.

Hagan said she had never heard of the Godless American PAC until the Dole camp issued a press release about it in August.

The Dole campaign issued a press release three weeks before the fundraiser saying who the hosts of the event were. It also claims the Hagan staff took great pains to modify the original invitation to the fundraiser so the hosts’ names would not be mentioned.

The N.C. Republican Party has made references to Hagan’s appearance at the fundraiser in two direct-mail pieces.

Dole spokesman Dan McLagan said Hagan snuck into the Boston home through a side door to avoid cameras outside.

He said footage showing Hagan at the event was shot by representatives of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

McLagan said he couldn’t believe Hagan attended the event, especially after the Republicans put out word of her plans.

“I was absolutely floored that she went,” McLagan said. “It’s just a colossal error in judgment. It’s campaign malpractice, almost.”

The 30-second ad from the Dole campaign starts with an announcer saying “A leader of the Godless Americans PAC recently held a secret fundraiser in Kay Hagan’s honor.”

It goes on to show clips of Ellen Johnson, executive director of Godless Americans PAC, saying “There is no god to rely on” and, in a different interview, “There was no Jesus.’

The ad continues with David Silverman of the Godless Americans PAC saying the group would be for taking “under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance and removing “In God We Trust” from money.

The ad concludes with the narrator saying, “Godless Americans and Kay Hagan. She hid from cameras. Took Godless money. What did Hagan promise in return?”

Then there’s a cut back to Johnson’s voice saying, “There is no God.”

Hagan was particularly upset that the the voiceover was shown with her photograph, as if she was saying, “There is no god.”

“That’s not my voice, and I definitely do not share their beliefs,” Hagan said.

McLagan, the Dole spokesman, said he finds it odd that the Hagan camp is “hanging their hat” on the “There is no God” voiceover.

He said it’s “obvious” that the voice is not intended to be Hagan’s, noting that Johnson had spoken and been shown earlier in the ad.

“She doesn’t look anything like Hagan,” McLagan said.

He laughed when asked if the Dole camp was considering pulling the ad as a result of Hagan’s complaints and threats of a cease-and-desist order.

“It happens every campaign,” McLagan said. “Someone makes a great deal of noise” in response to an ad.

He said he’d never known of a campaign ad being pulled because of a cease-and-desist order.

“It’s virtually impossible to do for a campaign ad,” McLagan said.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has put out a longer version (2 minutes, 42 seconds) of the “Godless Americans” ad that’s been showing on Web sites. Dole is responsible for the 30-second television ad which debuted Tuesday night statewide.

Hagan said her family always attends her church’s 11 p.m. Christmas Eve service, then spends Christmas morning making breakfast at a residential home for elderly adults with cerebral palsy. It allows the staff to have Christmas at home with their families, she said.

Hagan said Dole should be ashamed of herself. “What she is doing right now is slandering me and my personal character,” Hagan said.

Most polls have shown Hagan with a slim lead in the U.S Senate race against Dole, a Salisbury native, and Libertarian Christopher Cole.

Have you no decency Senator? : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 10:49 PM

How would a Christian defame the charachter of another Christian. Hagan is a Sunday school teacher and you tar and feather her with slander. We deserve better than that from our senator. NC is increasingly in the national political news for exactly this type of dirty ads and talk. Senator Dole, please tell us what have you done, what do you plan to do and how is it different from Kay Hagan if you want to be taken seriously. P.S. And you could visit the state that you represent.

Slanderous : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 10:38 PM

The Dole ad was slanderous and obviously created from a point of true desperation. Dole is behind in the polls. Kay is a wonderful, sweet, southern Christian woman. Vote straight Democratic Ticket!

Pathetic : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 8:32 PM

The comments posted here really display the complete ignorance most single-minded fundamentalist supposed "Christians" have. I'm completely appalled by the statements implying that one must be Republican (read: Conservative and fanatically right-wing. Hey, since we're all making ludicrous assumptions here...) to be Christian and believe in the Bible. Clearly you should reevaluate your beliefs. Though I'm sure your radical god (yours is apparently very different from mine, so I'll denote him a lower "g") will be perfectly fine with ridiculous slander and attacks to other human souls so long as those doing the attacks do it in his name (or McCains...Or Bush's...Well hey, as long as it's the name of some Republican it works, right?). I'm sure he's also extremely proud of your work during the Crusades and simply beaming at the supreme job done by your Inquisition. Have you shown him your Witch trials from Salem yet? I can't wait to see the "do-gooder" points you get from that one. In seriousness, how can you sit there and preach attacks to people simply because of their political views? Will my views on taxes and health care get me a one way ticket to hell? I scoff. Oh, and since it's so incredibly easy to quote the Bible to make anything you say accurate in your own mine, I'll do it too! (Isn't this game just exciting?) Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress. (Judges 10:14) I know too much to be conservative or liberal. Psalms (ch. XXII, v. 17) The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Proverbs (ch. XI, v. 25) (Please, anything can be taken out of context to show any point. Do not demean man's intelligence by falling for that trap.)

Deception : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 7:46 PM

Using somebody else's voice on an ad is deception and it is wrong. There is nothing Christian about deceiving the voters like that and it is a very unfortunate reflection on Dole and the GOP that this is the only way they feel they can win. This ugliness will be Dole's legacy here in NC as she has done so little else in the state.

Is Kay for real? : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 5:52 PM

I voted for Kay Hagan, and would still vote for her. But it's ridiculous for her to think she could get a "cease and desist order" to pull that ad. Any first year law student knows that it would be an unconstitutional prior restraint on free speech. Kay's a public figure, and it is equally improbable that she could get any judgment in her favor for libel or slander, either. You're only fanning the fire of that rumor that Republicans have been spreading that we Dems wanna abridge free speech. Sorry, Kay. But on this particular issue, you're an idiot.

DOLE'S AD : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 5:50 PM

It amazes me how these people come up with this stuff! Reminds me of the swift boat saga. Will they stop at nothing? Does it have to bear even some semblance of truth? There's got to be a day of reckonin'.

Poor Kay Hagan is crying : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 4:48 PM

Has she never hear "Birds of a feather flock together"? If she was ashamed of the Godless group, then why did she go there? If Hagan can't run with the big dogs, she should stay on the porch (in the NC Senate). Hagan does not deny she was there does she? She just doesn't like for it to be known.

So Hagen wanted the cash but doesn't want to take responsiblity...typical for a democrat. I don't see what her complaint is about the ad. It's not a distortion to say she attened the fundraiser and took their money ...and the voters deserve to know about it!

Hagan accepts money from Godless group : Wednesday, October 29, 2008 3:27 PM

Ecclesiastes 10:2 says, " A wise man's heart inclines him toward the right, but a fool's heart toward the left." If you claim to be a Christian, who believes in the bible, how can you be a secular progressive Democrat?
