Eighth-grade Knox Middle School student Emalee Young has been accepted into the 2010 People To People Student Ambassador Program. She will travel and study for three weeks with peers from the Charlotte area in China.

Started in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower, the program bases student acceptance on a demonstration of leadership, citizenship and a desire to learn about diverse cultures in an effort to promote global peace and understanding. While in Xi'an, China, Emalee will live with a family and attend the village school. In addition, Emalee will travel to Beijing, Shanghai, Wuzhen and Hong Kong where she will visit Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China.

To raise money for her trip, Emalee has designed a fundraising Web page www.emaleetochina.moogo.com. Emalee is the daughter of Michael and Diane Young of Salisbury.

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
