Rowan County firm will seek incentives to expand

An existing Rowan County industry will seek county government incentives to expand its operations and create 162 new jobs.

Robert Van Geons, executive director of RowanWorks, the economic development arm of the county, said the industry already employs 225 workers.

He declined to reveal the company's name yet, and said his office is referring to the incentives request as "Project M&M."

The company wants to invest $7.8 million to create 162 new jobs. Wages for those jobs would be roughly $40,000 a year, Van Geons said.

He asked the Rowan County Board of Commissioners to schedule a public hearing on the incentives proposal for Nov. 2. "It is very time sensitive," Van Geons said, adding the state also is involved.

"I look forward to providing you detailed information regarding this request and this project in coming days," Van Geons told commissioners. "We are rapidly gathering information for the required economic impact study."
