ELON — Security officers escorted a protester from Latham Park's outfield Thursday as Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin moved toward the end of her talk at a N.C. campaign rally.

The disturbance was enough to interrupt Palin, who regrouped nimbly.

She invited the officers to bring the protester back.

"Maybe he needs to stay and learn a little bit," she said.

Palin said all the right things for the several thousand people who braved a sweltering day in mid-October to see and hear the 2008 election season's true celebrity.

The Alaska governor rewarded the Elon University crowd with phrases that have become her signature or linked to her running mate, Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain.

There was the standard mention of McCain's being a maverick — "He is the maverick," Palin insisted.

She fed into the crowd chants of "Drill, baby, drill," as she pushed her mantra to drill for domestic oil and natural gas and set the country on a path — while tapping into alternative energy sources, too — of energy independence.

"You're right," she shouted back. "Drill, baby, drill, and mine, baby, mine."

She added an emphatic "You betcha" after that.

Following up on Wednesday night's last presidential debate, Palin mentioned "Joe the plumber" twice in promising that a Republican administration would cut taxes and keep government off the back of small businesses.

But she also deviated at times from her prepared remarks to speak to something she noticed in the crowd.

When talking about children with special needs, Palin, who has an infant with Down syndrome, stopped to remark on a homemade sign in the audience that said an extra chromosome means extra love.

"That's kinda cool," Palin said.

The governor spoke in front of the McCain campaign's "Country First" slogan, draped in a banner across the face of the baseball field's press box. The bleachers behind her and the diamond in front of her were filled with supporters, curious students and the media.

People began streaming into the ballpark three hours before Palin's appearance, and the 90-degree day led to heat exhaustion for several people in the crowd.

"This Alaska gal is roasting," Palin acknowledged as she took the microphone.

Palin typically has drawn large audiences, almost in rock star fashion. Vendors outside the ballpark were selling McCain-Palin buttons, ballcaps and T-shirts, but the more popular buttons said things such as "The Hottest VP from the Coolest State," "History in the Making" and "It's a Girl!"

"I try to instill in my girls that women can do anything," said Dawn Williams, a Graham mother who home-schools her three children, Caitlin, Emily and Gabe. In the hours before Palin arrived, they waited in the shade along the outfield's warning track in left field.

"What a good field trip," Dawn Williams said.

The family members said they were definitely McCain-Palin supporters and would not be attending had it been a rally for the Democratic ticket of Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Caitlin, 13, said Palin would stop illegal immigration, and Emily, 11, said Palin would try to lower taxes.

Sarah Carideo and Michelle Wilco, a pair of Elon University freshmen, said they already had made up their minds to vote for Obama.

"I came because it's just such a monumental thing" for the university, Carideo said. The school also had a visit from former President Bill Clinton in the spring.

The women, both 18, said they were excited to be first-time voters in a sometimes controversial though history-making election.

Carideo said the presidential race is so close that if McCain and Palin win, at least they took the effort to hear Palin and know what to expect in a Republican administration.

A former Hillary Clinton supporter, Wilco said electing a woman as president or vice president was not as important to her as electing the right woman, period.

Wilco, who is from Atlanta, said she doesn't think Palin is qualified for the vice president's job. She contended the governor has done a poor job in Alaska, wasting taxpayer dollars.

Carideo said Obama brings a fresh attitude and will be able to put the country back on track. Obama and the seasoned Biden, make a good combo, she added.

As overused as it probably sounds, Wilco said, Obama really will be an agent for change. "He brings people together," she said.

Joan Setzer and Susan Rives traveled to the Palin rally from Greensboro and are ardent supporters.

Setzer said Palin isn't the typical Washington bureaucrat. "She's fresh to me," Setzer said.

"She has her opinion and she doesn't mind stating it," Rives said. "She doesn't cower down to anyone."

State Sen. Andrew Brock, R-Davie, said Palin's selection as McCain's running mate immediately breathed new life into the GOP. Even though Alaska has only three electoral votes, Brock said, Palin's background and political philosophy transcend state borders and party affiliations.

The person on the national political stage most like "one of us," Brock said, is Palin.

"To me, she's a lot like Teddy Roosevelt ... a conservative populist," he added.

Palin's theme during much of her 20-minute message Thursday was that the Democratic ticket of Obama and Biden always sees more government as the solution.

"But too often, it's the problem," she said, repeating that a McCain-Palin administration would put government on the side of the people. Palin accused the Democrats of concentrating on the Republican Bush administration and the past, because the past "is where you find blame," she said.

The future is where you find solutions, Palin said.

The governor insinuated that groups working on behalf of the Obama campaign are committing voter fraud and Obama won't discuss it.

As for the country's economic problems, Palin said when you find yourself in a hole, "the first thing you do is stop digging."

A McCain-Palin administration would put a spending freeze on all but the vital functions of government, she said, promising it would balance the federal budget by the end of its first term.

Palin said the United States was not a perfect nation, and it has the ability to learn from its mistakes. But it is a nation of perfect ideals, she said.

McCain, who polls show is in a tight contest with Obama in North Carolina, plans a campaign rally Saturday morning in Concord.

Gun Rights are secured by Constitution : Monday, October 20, 2008 7:26 AM

Just a couple months ago, the Supreme Court ruled on gun rights. It is a settled issue. To change it would require a Constitutional Amendment now. No one is stupid enough to propose that. So gun rights are secure. It's a non-issue this election, and that's why McSame hasn't brought it up. Chill out.

Lefties want to call Republicans extreme??? Changing gun rights would require a Constitutional Amendment : Saturday, October 18, 2008 3:28 PM

Gun rights pertain to the individual, so says the US Supreme Court. So it wouldn't matter what Obama's opinion on guns are. It would take a Constitutional Amendment to enforce any more gun restrictions than those we have already. Obama was asked about this, and his response was that the right to bear arms is an individual right, just like the High Court says. He's no more out to change that Constitutional Right than he would propose a Constitutional Amendment to ban free speech. This malarky is contrived into falsely scaring the bejesus out of voters, in a desperate move to bolster the failed ideas of McSame.

Sifting through the opinions : Saturday, October 18, 2008 12:00 PM

Wow. Some of you liberal posters are really a bunch of insulting biggots. Bumkins? Backwater? Where did you get all that anger? From Clinton selling us to the Chinese? Nope. How about losing the war? Nope we're winning. The economy maybe? Look at the Senate. It's democrat controlled. I'll tell you I'm a moderate conservative. Personal rights, responsibilites and accountability are my values. I like alot of what Obama has to say. The problem is: I don't believe him. We have got to keep our good jobs here in th USA. His tax plan might create some low paying dead end jobs but it is sure to cause the good ones to go overseas. If I run a business I want to make money. Not have it taken away. I'm also going to invest my money in a successful one. If I start a small business that grosses $250,001 that means it has a chance to grow except I'll have to pay higher taxes. Exxon tax increases may be a good idea, Joe the plumber aren't. Everyone knows in his heart that while Obama talks tough about foreign policy, he will cut and run at the first sign of trouble just like Clinton. Depending on who you ask we haven't gotten respect from foreign countries since WWII. This war has, among other things, reaffirmed that we mean business when our interests are threatened. I'm not afraid to admit I was one of the 80% who was in favor of the war at the time. Bush stuck it out and an opportunity exists to benefit millions. I don't like leaders who lead by polls. Their job is to make good, well informed decisions. We are not all well informed. That's unfortunate but that's the way it is. A partisan press doesn't help. Socialism stifles personal achievement and that is the underlying theme of Obamas rhetoric.

obama is against our 2nd ammendment rights : Friday, October 17, 2008 10:07 PM

At least one poster here does not know his candidate is against private ownership of guns. The problem seems to be this: you believe what Obama says. I believe what he has does. In the past he has consistently voted against the 2nd amendment gun ownership rights. One must believe what he does, instead of what he says. Is that hard to understand? So if Obama votes against the 2nd amendment, but then says he is for the 2nd amendment, what are his true feelings? Actions speak louder than words. He is against the 2nd amendment. Case closed.

Wait and see : Friday, October 17, 2008 7:16 PM

I see Bradshaw and KL's postings as arrogant attacks against fundamentalist Christians who want to mix Church and State. Not categorical attacks on Christianity or the Bible. As for the polls, we'll simply have to wait until November 4th. But McCain/Palin's poll numbers are worsening, and they're way behind in critical 'must-win' states, electorally. Networks are already talking about a landslide victory for Obama, and trying to find something to fill air time until 2AM on election night. I really don't think Christians, mainstream or extreme, have anything to fear from either of these guys, though. That's just my two cents.

Get over yourselves. Democrats are suppose to be the accepting party who doesn't discriminate, but you act like you hate anyone that doesn't agree with you, especially Christians and conservative women. This is a tight race, but I believe the poles about as much as I believe Keith Olberman is an unbiased news anchor. Thanks for proving my point : Friday, October 17, 2008 3:09 PM

I actually was an undecided voter until this election, and have no party affiliation. And I DID NOT base my choice on commercials, or newspaper articles. I researched, read books, read both candidates plans and based my decision on for what I thought would lead to a better america for myself and my daughter. And if I am a hippocrite for that, then so be it. Once again, I am not affiliated with any party, but for the reasoning that MOST (not all) McCain supporters are judgemental, and tend to lose their composure when discussing politics, much like the man himself, then I do hope that somewhere out there, there are open minded republicans that can balance out the ignorance that is portrayed by ones like yourself. As far as the "voting for a trend" comment one of you all made...wouldn't a vote for McCain be voting for a trend...and the country's trend has been moving in the right direction...hmmm..try opening your ignorant minds, it will make you a much happier person.

Palin has it right : Friday, October 17, 2008 12:53 PM

Some posters here are quite touchy when they read the truth about Obama and Biden. McCain may be old, but he is not a political hack like Biden is. Biden buys the whole liberal Democrat agenda - hook, line, and sinker. So while Biden does qualify as a old political hack, McCain does not. McCain thinks for himself. Biden and Obama do not. Can you name one item where Obama or Biden differs with the standard liberal democrat agenda? Didn't think so. Do you knew jerk Democrat liberals deny Obama's association with ACORN and the nearly million dollars he gave them for (fraudulent) voter registration? Do you deny Obama's long association with the racist Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Do you deny Obama's association with terrorist Bill Ayers and felon Tony Rezko? The truth hurts doesn't it? Joe, the plumber and Obama's "spread the wealth" comment are having a positive effect on McCain's campaign. In unguarded moments like that, the truth about Obama is coming out. We don't like what we hear. We want lower taxes. Obama wants higher taxes. We want to win in Iraq. Obama wants out with a lose. We are pro life. Obama is for abortions. We are for freedom. Obama is for more government control. We are for the second amendment. Obama is against the second amendment.

So funny that once again many people rely on the polls to predict the election results. Have any of you participated in the polls? How about your family, neighbors, friends??? No one I know of has polled so basically a small percentage of Americans are being reported as prefering one candidate over another. Hmmm, there are over a million registered voters not affiliated. Many are like me that will always vote Republican or Conservatively but choose not to change my registration info which claims I am a Demo so the false sense of security that the Liberal Dem's house themselves with can be foreclosed on like the rest of American homes. I can't wait until the elections REAL results reveal that more Americans have brains and voted the "right" way then those that don't do their research and vote for what is "popular"! "Don't base your choice on a commercial". If not for commercials and speaches, why would you support Obama? He sure hasn't proven anything. Also, things have gotten worse because we have a Democratic led Senate with a 12% approval rating. It's difficult to accomplish anything with people like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid at the helm. Bush has been awful, but even he is viewed more positive than the Dems in congress, and you're putting one of the least productive out of that group into the White House. I hope your pockets are deep, because Obama's about to stick his hand in them.

PAY Attention people! Stop following what is trendy and vote for your future! : Friday, October 17, 2008 12:05 PM

Obama keeps talking about how he is going to help the average american household by cutting taxes but if you look at the numbers that may not be true. My wife and I are the normal american family making in the mid 50Ks that he continues to say will be helped the most. Most would even say that is the lower middle class. We have one younger child and work for larger corporations. I keep hearing that if he is president that it will cause many to loose a job and (by the way the states are going to be out of money for unemployment and will have to take a loan from the federal govement and have to pay it back by raising state taxes) that may be true or not but if he does increase the taxes of the large companies it will affect us the workers. He is going to give us a 1,000 tax credit which sounds great and to do this he will tax the upper class and spread the wealth. Now the problem i see is that by taxing the larger corporations they are going to either increase prices on their products or services or they are going to cut pay on the employees. I am not saying we will make less but last year we got a raise of 1.50 an hour between the two of us not great but not bad either. Now with his tax plan they will be less genourous with the raises and maybe next year we will get a raise thats just 1.00. Most people say that is not a big deal at all as we got a raise.. However lets look at the little difference a little more. That cost us .50 an hour for 40 hours. It would not seem like a big deal as it is just 20 a week. If we multiply that by 52 weeks. The total is $1,040 we loose in this tax plan then we have been getting the last few years. Of course I am sure that the bonus we get each year will also be a little less as well. So he is going to give the middle class american family a 1,000 tax credit but with the corporate tax he adds the raises we get will end up evening out. So we would have been better off with out the increase it taxes on anyone and no tax cut for us. So who does his plan really help the poor workers or the unemployed that will get a tax credit for doing nothing. You say that i am a single worker well you get the same thing if you have been getting a .50 raise well the company cuts that in half next year. That is just 10 a week less raise you make but over a year that is your $500 tax break they say you will get SO his plan does not help the working middle class it helps the poor and unemployed that pay no taxes in the first place.
