Events are planned this weekend to celebrate North Rowan High School's 50th anniversary.

The North Rowan Alumni Association is sponsoring the events, which will take place Friday and Saturday.

Robin Butler, a 1970 North Rowan graduate and president of the alumni association, said the group wanted to give Cavalier fans a chance to celebrate their school's history.

At the homecoming football game Friday, former North Rowan football players and band members will be on hand. Charles Dunlap, who used to be the band director at North, will lead a combination alumni/student band during the game, Butler said.

Former homecoming queens will be there, too.

"We'll have at least half of the former homecoming queens there," Butler said.

He said the North Rowan Alumni Association aims to enhance the image of the school, plan events and award scholarships.

For more information about registering for this weekend's festivities, go to www.nrhscavaliers or call 704-984-1658.

The events will include:

- A barbecue dinner from 5:30 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. Friday. A dinner ticket is required.

- The North Rowan homecoming football game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Providence Grove. Admission to the game is $5.

- The 50th anniversary gala celebration will start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer. Attendees should wear alumni bracelets the association has made. Without a bracelet, the admission fee will be $35.

The event will feature information booths and food and beverage vendors. Soda, water, wine and beer will be for sale.

At 8 p.m., music and dancing will begin in the Roundhouse.

Proceeds from the event will go to the North Rowan Alumni Association.

- The third annual Cavalier 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. The course will start in front of the school and end on the school's track.

Registration by Wednesday will cost $15. After that time, and on race day, the cost will be $20. All proceeds will go to the North Rowan volleyball team.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners in several age groups.

For more information about registering for the race, go to www.northrowan.com/5K.

- Members of the Furnitureland chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America Show will display classic cars from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday at the Transportation Museum. The event is free.
