A tractor-trailer turned onto its side and spilled a load of logs onto Julian Road at Jake Alexander Boulevard early Wednesday afternoon.
The accident blocked traffic at the intersection for about two-and-a-half hours, but it was a miracle the logs flying off the truck didn't hit any cars at the congested intersection.
"Normally it's stacked up with cars (on Julian Road)," Salisbury Police Officer D.P. Fleming said. "We got lucky."
Fleming guessed that up to 16 vehicles could have been hit by logs had they been waiting at the intersection as is typical.
But somehow traffic had cleared on the Tractor Supply side of Julian Road when the logging truck, turning right off Jake Alexander Boulevard, took the turn too fast for its heavy load and flipped onto its left side, Fleming said.
The accident occurred about 12:45 p.m.
David Harris, 51, of David Harris Logging in Denton, was the driver. His 1995 Freightliner was transporting a load from a logging site on Harrison Road.
A 2005 Kia driven by Douglas Lawrence, of Norwood, skidded into a ditch to avoid the logs coming at him, Fleming reported. Neither Harris nor Lawrence was injured.
Fleming didn't issue any charges, but the Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Division was called in to see if any mechanical problems contributed to the wreck.
