4-H dog show a howling good time

Parents and grandparents were restless as judge Lynn Meeks gave the final results during the 2009 4-H Junior Dog Show.

Scarlett, an Italian Greyhound shown by Tripp Oliphant, won Best in Show among 23 participating dogs. Unlike other competitive shows, based on pedigree and breed characteristics, the 4-H Junior Dog Show is a fun experience for all members of the family, including the dog.

Lynn Meeks, a member of the Salisbury Kennel Club, judged the show, taking time to explain to both audience and participants her rationale behind each decision in placing the animals. Key areas of consideration included showmanship, the relationship between the youth and the dog, eye contact and awareness of the judge and grooming of the dog. Meeks also quizzed exhibitors with simple questions to test their knowledge of the dog.

All exhibitors received a ribbon and the Best of Class received both a ribbon and a trophy. Here are the results of the 2009 4-H Junior Dog Show at the Rowan County Fair:

Hound Group

1st — Tripp Oliphant with Scarlett (Italian Greyhound)

2nd — Erik Thomas with Sugar (Miniature Dachshund)

3rd — Abby Bogle with Ben (Beagle)

Sporting Group

1st — Mary Kaufmann with Thomas (Golden Retriever)

2nd — Bryson Stoner with Daisy (Chocolate Lab)

3rd — Caroline Gemmell with Clementine (Yellow Lab)

4th — Madison Jones with Bella (Golden Retriever)

5th — Audrey Oliphant with Annie (Golden Retriever)

Non-Sporting Group

1st — Mackenzie Kuhns with Oreo (Standard Poodle)

2nd — Tiffin Jacobs with George (French Bulldog)

Working Group

1st — Jessica Snider with Jonas (Boxer)

2nd — Jinny Hunt with Mocha (Boxer)

Terrier Group

1st — Allison Williams with Virgil (Cairn Terrier)

2nd — Erin Christner with Tasha (Terrier Mix)

Toy Group

1st — Erik Thomas with Sugar (Miniature Dachshund)

2nd — Tripp Oliphant with Scarlett (Italian Greyhound)

3rd — Meredith Stanley with Lily (Miniature Dachshund)

4th — Ashley Bennett with Trixie (Yorkshire Terrier)

Herding Group

1st — Sarah Lakey with Sheba (Siberian Husky/Mallonois mix)

2nd — Erin Christner with Earthquake (Bouvier des Flanders)

3rd — Faith Blume with Norman (Blue Heeler)

4th — Miranda Miller with Candy (Australian Shepherd)

5th — Jordan Van Voorhis with Shepps (Collie/lab mix)

Puppy Group

(dogs ages 4 months to 1 year old)

(commands such as sit, stay, roll over, bark, beg) – Audience judges

2nd — Abby Bogle with Ben (Beagle)

3rd — Erik Thomas with Sugar (Miniature Dachshund)

Talent Class

(something special your dog can do such as jump through a hula hoop) – Audience judges
