GRANITE QUARRY — A man was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury after a Sunday morning shooting at a Walnut Street residence.

A 911 call was received shortly after 2 a.m. advising that gunshots and a screaming female had been heard in the area. Officers with the Granite Quarry-Faith Police Department responded to 119 S. Walnut St., where they found two victims of gunshot wounds and the alleged assailant still on the scene, according to a report filed by Officer R.D. Seamon and Sgt. K.W. Trivett.

Based on information obtained by officers at the scene, David Paul Wilhelm, 27, had a .22-caliber pistol in his possession when an altercation started between him and resident John Peterson.

During the struggle, the report says, Wilhelm's weapon discharged into Peterson's hand, with shrapnel striking Tiffany Miller, 29, in the neck.

The Granite Quarry Fire Department and Rowan County EMS also responded to the scene. Peterson and Miller were transported by ambulance to Rowan Regional Medical Center, where Miller was treated and released, and Peterson was admitted.

He was listed in good condition Sunday night, according to a medical center spokesperson.

Wilhelm is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond pending a first-appearance hearing in Rowan County District Court.

What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
