Pfeiffer/SCC link

An upcoming seminar sponsored by Pfeiffer University and Stanly Community College will mark the beginning of a new day in collaboration between the two Stanly County institutions of higher education, SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor says.

The seminar, Opportunities 2008 — Creating Pathways to Success, is a mutual event sponsored by Pfeiffer's Center for Lifelong Learning and SCC's Small Business Center and features a keynote address by Dean Kessel, president of the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

The Oct. 2 seminar is one of the first visible signs of commitment that Pfeiffer and SCC are working together to provide greater opportunities for citizens of Stanly County and the region. The effort follows a spring meeting on ways the two institution can work more closely on a wide range of projects, including joint programs, sharing facilities and allowing students from both institutions to attend events on either campus.

SCC has scheduled two offerings on the Pfeiffer campus for the fall, Spanish for Protective Services and Money Smarts.

Another area of collaboration would include providing office space on the SCC campus for a Pfeiffer recruiter and offering Pfeiffer courses at SCC's Albemarle and Locust campuses.

Commended student

Emily L. Graczyk, a student at East Rowan High School, has been named a commended student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship program.

Commended students are among the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Who's Who in Art

Richard Triplett will be included in the 2009 edition of Who's Who in American Art published by Marquis Publications.

A native of Lenoir, Triplett graduated from Catawba College in 1967.

He began working for Louis Newman Galleries in 1977, eventually becoming vice president and chief financial officer as the gallery moved from Los Angeles to Beverly Hills. After 22 years with Newman, he became gallery manager at Anderson Galleries in Beverly Hills, leaving that position after five years to start his own company in March.

The firm, Richard Triplett Fine Arts, is an art consulting firm for artists, galleries, collectors and museum acquisition committees. It is located in West Hollywood, Calif.
