Kevin Carter donates a drum to the Erwin Middle School band.

Recently, Erwin Middle School Band received a gracious gift from the Carter family in Rockwell, a new custom-made drum set. Kevin Carter, father of Erwin percussion student Kayla Carter, made the donation to help the band program and to hopefully inspire others to do the same. The students have affectionately named the drum set "Ruby," partly due to its red burst color.

Kevin Carter, a drummer himself, also works as the road manager for the hit band, Daughtry. He has even brought the drummer for Daughtry, Joey Barnes, to visit the band class and play along with the students, a highlight not soon to be forgotten.

"We cannot express enough how grateful we are to the Carter family for this donation to our program. This is an incredible drum set that will be used for years to come" states Sonya Ferguson, band director at Erwin Middle School.

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
