A Salisbury man has donated 10.1 acres of land for the Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary in memory of his late wife.

The property, located on Grace Church Road about a quarter of a mile from U.S. 29, will be the site of the no-kill animal shelter, according to Anne Ingram, president of the nonprofit animal rescue group. The shelter and adoption center will be named The Connie Mitchell Clark Building.

Ingram said Connie and David Clark had talked with Faithful Friends volunteers about donating the land just a few weeks before she died Jan. 17, 2008. After his wife's unexpected death, Ingram said, David Clark made the decision to go ahead with the donation in her memory.

"She loved animals, especially dogs," Ingram said.

"We're just overwhelmed by David Clark's generosity," she said, "overwhelmed by how much he loved his wife and wanted to do this in her memory and overwhelmed that he cares enough about animals to make this kind of donation. It just opens up all kinds of opportunities for Faithful Friends."

Ingram said the land is more than Faithful Friends could have ever hoped for. "It will allow us to make the most of the space," she said.

Some of the additional features being considered are playing fields for dogs, trails for walking dogs, a memorial garden and a pet cemetery.

Rodney Cress, a member of Faithful Friends' board of advisers and Land Committee, was instrumental in securing the donation, Ingram said. Others who played key roles in the transaction, she said, were attorney Tom Caddell, Land Committee Chairman Bob Bailey and surveyor Mel Thompson.

Faithful Friends volunteers have raised $250,000 over the past 13 months to go toward the no-kill shelter, including a $100,000 contribution by Nancy and Bill Stanback.

"The community support has been tremendous," Ingram said.

Though the total cost is estimated at $500,000, she said, "We won't wait on that to begin building."

Once plans are complete, the group will launch a capital campaign to raise the remaining costs.

Ingram was in Eagle, Colo., last week to tour a no-kill shelter similar to the one being planned by Faithful Friends. She said initial plans call for a 5,000-square-foot shelter and adoption center.

Ingram said Faithful Friends hopes volunteers will step forward to help with the construction or donate supplies when the time comes.

"We would love to start building the first of the year," she said. "I think we'll be ready then, and I hope we can begin operations next year."

In the meantime, fundraising events continue on behalf of Faithful Friends.

Outback Steakhouse is sponsoring another fundraiser luncheon Oct. 4, and the second annual Paws in the Park walk is coming up Saturday at the Salisbury Greenway.

Co-sponsored by Rowan Surge and the LandTrust for Central North Carolina, half the proceeds of the walk will go to Faithful Friends and half to the LandTrust.

In 2007, its first year, Paws in the Park raised $5,000, and organizers hope to double that amount this year.

This year's Paws in the Park will feature a new attraction — a Dog Olympics put on by Lazy 5 Ranch Veterinary Services. Events will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will include Little Doggy Limbo for dogs who weigh less than 50 pounds, Big Dog Limbo for dogs over 50 pounds, Doggy Musical Sit, a Dog/Owner Look-alike Contest and Silly Pet Tricks.

The Paws in the Park Dog Olympics and walk will be held rain or shine. For more information, log on to www.salisburypawsinthepark.com.

Eyes Wide Open Needs to Clean Out Their Ears : Sunday, September 28, 2008 6:09 PM

Too bad you didn't have your ears wide open at that first meeting, or you would have heard that the organization you're talking about was Friends in Need-- a no-kill sanctuary in Lexington-- who has been rescuing Davidson County pets-- not Rowan-- for the last 13 years. How could Faithful Friends have a euthanasia rate when they don't even have a sanctuary yet? Faithful Friends is not affiliated with any other group -- that info is registered with the NC Secretary of State. The County Shelter doesn't make revenue on animals -- the adoption fee goes entirely toward the cost of spay-neuter for the adopted pet. It costs us taxpayers $63 per animal for every unwanted pet at the Rowan County Shelter. And those pets you say Faithful Friends turned away from their non-existent sanctuary -- did you take them in? Don't you have anything better to do with your time than to trash people who are trying to help? I have personal taken in over 30 cats just this year at my own expense. All money that has come into Faithful Friends has gone directly into the building fund. I still have 6 cats that are up for adoption, 2 of which were feral kittens. How many dogs or cats have you rescued just this year and paid the vet and food bills for? Some people are out there making a difference while there are others, like yourself, that do nothing but complain when all that energy could be put to good use. So, stop complaining about something you obviously have no clue about. Why don't you go to FaithfulFriendsnc.org and find out who they really are.

Unfair Comparison Grunt : Friday, September 19, 2008 8:41 AM

Grunt, I attended some of Faithful Friends Meetings, they claim to be opening a No-Kill Shelter, and boast of their low euthanasia rate and unfairly compare it to that of the Rowan County Animal Shelter. They said they have only euthanized 5 dogs at their Davidson facility. During their presentation, they stated they kept from filling up the shelter with permanent residents by only taking in “Highly Adoptable” animals. To compare their euthanasia rate to that of The Rowan County Shelter is truly unfair considering the Rowan County Animal Shelter does not have the option of turning away injured, sick or vicious animals that should be euthanized for the health and safety of the community, shelter workers, and the animals themselves. Wouldn’t these “highly adoptable” animals be just as highly adoptable at the Rowan County Shelter? By diverting the highly adoptable animals away from the Rowan County Shelter, they would be further skewing the euthanasia ratio, and siphoning revenue from the Rowan County Shelter in the form of adoption fees from easily placed animals. I personally know of animals in need who have been turned away by the Faithful Freinds organization over the past year. I guess they weren't "adoptable" enough for them.

With McCain/Palin in office babies will be safer : Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:03 PM

When the Supreme Court outlaws abortion (murder) on demand, our babies will be safe. However, if the Obama/Biden ticket wins, the murder will continue.

THANK YOU MR. CLARK !!!!!! : Thursday, September 18, 2008 9:32 PM

What a wonderful and giving soul you have Mr. Clark.I am sure your wife is reaping rewards in Heaven for having had the same.Thank you for awarding so many unwanted animals a home and a chance to live happily ever after!!!! And may anyone reading this know, that animal advocates are PRO-LIFE in all regards. We are the voice for those and things that cannot speak and we do not hold animals in a higher regard than unborn children. We act upon things that we are passionate about. We don't wait around thinking someone else will do what we need done. And we are just one of the many small voices echoing among the multitudes asking only for an end to needless suffering.....

That is something that you could spend your time working on like Anne Ingram did for the animals! Thats a perfect idea, however I bet you are too busy to be bothered and want the government to do it for you. Until then there is another place you can find this kind of place...it's called ALASKA! I bet if you talk to Gov. Palin she would be happy to find the funding if you want to move on up there! Happy trails!!!!!!!

Congratulations : Thursday, September 18, 2008 12:03 PM

Congratulations are in order to an organization which puts its money where its mouth is. They are taking the lead in NO-Kill shelters, instead of asking for government to mandate them at taxpayers' expense. We need more private, nonprofit groups to follow their example, so we don't get another RJI fiasco on our hands.

stop the killing : Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:47 AM

we should all support Faithful Friends and their effort to stop Rowan from killing 8,000 dogs and cats like they did last year. 96% of all cats taken to Rowan animal control are killed and 84% of all dogs. support Faithful Friends

Another NO-Kill Zone needed : Thursday, September 18, 2008 10:55 AM

It sure would be nice if someone would start a NO-Kill area for babies about to be killed via abortion. Sometimes I think we care more for animals than for babies. Both animals and babies should be taken care of.
