Staff report

The driver of a mo-ped died at the scene of a head-on collision on Sherrills Ford Road shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Trooper M.E. Heon of the N.C. Highway Patrol said the mo-ped operator crossed the centerline of Sherrills Ford Road near the intersection with Oscar Lane and struck the right front side of an oncoming Honda.

The impact destroyed the mo-ped and threw off the driver, who died shortly after the crash while emergency personnel were setting up a landing zone for a medical helicopter.

Late Monday night, Trooper Heon was attempting to locate and notify the man's next of kin before releasing his identity. He was described as being in his 50s and a resident of the U.S. 70 area.

The driver of the Honda said all he saw was a headlight swerving into the path of his car.

The man declined to give his name and left quickly for Rowan Regional Medical Center, where his girlfriend had been taken.

Emergency personnel said the woman was very agitated.

The mo-ped struck the passenger's side of the Honda, smashing the windshield directly in front of the woman.

Scraps of the mo-ped littered the edge of the roadway and an adjacent yard.

The Rowan Rescue Squad and the Locke Volunteer Fire Department responded along with Rowan EMS.

not every one is a disgrace : Thursday, September 18, 2008 8:31 PM

not every drives a moped because of there lic. revocked and being drunk. John was a good man and was not drinking nor drunk. Read all your facks before accussing someone of being a disgrace. He had his lic. and was registered. He pays his taxes and everything else. Maybe they do not go the speed limit but maybe everyone else should slow down anyway. You may have to drive one oneday so hope you change your mind about the "real drivers". GET YOUR FACTS STAIGHT We love you john and you are in our prayers.

Two sides : Thursday, September 18, 2008 8:32 AM

If the Post did not report the name of the driver without an explanation of why the drivers name was not printed there would be many asking why the name of the driver was not reported. Saying the girlfriend was agitated was an explanation of why the man left in a hurry without giving his name. Any negative view of the article is at the fault of the reader and the reader’s interpretation. When reading a written assessment of an event, it is important to try to see both sides. Yes, I can see the negative angle, but on a second read I can also see why the man may have left in a rush.

In Regards to the last comment that someone does not give a name or emergency personnel say how people act, does not mean you have to post it. Im sure there are many ways a story can be told, without being considered negative.

It was not the Salisbury Post who said the woman was agitated. Emergency personnel said the woman was very agitated. Saying the man declined to give his name sounds a whole lot better than the man refused to give his name. No matter how it is written the man did not give his name. There is no kind way to say the man would not give his name.

I am sorry for the Scooter driver also but what about the people in the car? Can you imagine seeing one headlight coming toward you and no time to react? The Honda passenger was quoted as being agitated. Is this another word for "upset, hurt or scared"? The reporter or his sources need to be a little more careful with their choice of words to describe someone's emotions. Hooray for the fellow who declined your interview to be with his girlfriend. That is where he should have been. I will pray for the victims family but also for what the Honda drivers will go thru emotionally as well as physically. I never heard that the Honda driver would not be charged. This should have also been reported. Seems like we have more than one victim in this situation. How about all the facts.

to only a matter of time : Tuesday, September 16, 2008 10:37 PM

you know you should'nt be so quick to make judgements or be negative. my husbands rides a moped not because he lost his license or anything but because its was a good investment due to high gas prices he only spends about 2 dollars a week in gas to get to and from work which takes me 15 mins to get there in my car. and though the scene of the accident may show one thing that doesn't necessarily mean thats how it happened. example and truth when my husband was coming home from work one day a young boy was acting crazy and googing off in his truck going pretty fast, swerving deliberately in front of my husband acting like he was trying to hit him head on 2 times before my husband finally ran off the road and in a ditch on the left side of the road the truck had too ran off the road only with side tires in an attempt to continue making my husband think he was going to hit him. weather the intentions of the man in the truck were to just scare my husband or to really harm him is unknown. but if he had hit him accidentally or intentionally it would have been easy for the driver to play like my husband was the one swerving and caused the wreck due to point of impact and the side of the road he was on. but thankfully no one was harmed in this incident caused by the young driver in the truck only a scratched up bike. and yes i find it was odd the girl was agitated under the circumstance, if anything like my story maybe she was agitated over what her boyfriend had done. or maybe the newspaper needs to just be carefull and honest in the words they choose. my condolences go out to the family of the victim who was riding the moped no matter who was at fault

My 16 yr old son rides a scooter. He makes sure he wears a helmet, goggles, and also obeys all traffic laws. He also makes sure to get as close a safely possible to the edge of the road when a car comes up behind him. It gives him freedom to go where he needs to. He currently has a permit and a vehicle, but prefers his scooter because of gas prices and he is not entirely comfortable driving a car. He paid for it himself with money he earned working over the summer. He also pays for his own gas. I'd have one myself if I could ride one to work. Minimum age is 16, no passengers, 45 mph or under, helmet ...goggles are his precautions.

Lack of Professional Journalism : Tuesday, September 16, 2008 6:37 PM

First I would like to send my condolenses to the family of the victim whos life was lost. My thoughts and prayers go out to the driver and passenger of the car who will have to live with this horrific accident the rest of there lives. Second, Im appauled at the use of words "the driver declined" and "woman was aggitated". For any of you that have been in an accident, then you know just how shaken up you can be. If you or any passengers are hurt, your are more worried about them as you are giving statments to the newspaper. Lets be a little more considerate next time, please. Heaven forbid you are ever in a automobile accident, with the possiblity of someones life being lost, lets see if you take a moment to give your personal information or go to the hospital of where the ones you care about or concerns of the others vistims are. You, yourself are just looking for an interview as to where these individuals have to live with this the rest of there lives. I also feel that they shouldnt allow any-type of vehicle on a highway, unless they follow the same guidelines as us driving cars/motorcycles,etc. They also should be required to have a valid drivers license and current insurance.

Invalid Implications : Tuesday, September 16, 2008 5:03 PM

I don't believe it is fair to report that the man driving the honda "declined to give his name and left". This, to me, implies that he left because he had something to hide, rather than leaving because he had just been in a serious accident and had more important things to do than participate in an interview. Also, stating that the woman was agitated is a poor use of words. This is a negative connotation being used to describe a woman who was one of two victims in a very serious head on collision. The two victims were of course the two in the car, on the RIGHT side of the road. I believe reporters have a responibility to the public to refrain from using terminology that makes them and the Salisbury Post appear biased.

a simple disgrace : Tuesday, September 16, 2008 10:30 AM

to allow anyone to operate any motor driven device of any kind on city or county roads without insurance license, registration, road use tax, tag, and helmet is simply a disgrace. besides all the legal issues what about the safety of us "real" drivers? most of the scooters and mopeds cannot and should not run the posted speed limit. their use on streets with speed limits above 35 should be stopped. they are not designed to be on the highway anywhere in this country. city streets maybe but not major roads or throughfairs

Only a matter of time : Tuesday, September 16, 2008 8:42 AM

I know people post alot of negative things on the comment but we need to do something about this. You see folks on these scooters and mopeds that have lost their licenses for alcohol and other infractions. The should not be aloud to operate any type of motor vehicle at all. Also if you are going to ride one you should be a minimum age and have to go through a class. You see folks out here with their helmets cocked backed on their heads and not even strapped, heaven forbid to be in a wreck the helmet would not be of any use. In the times of high gas prices these scooters are invaluable as in many other countries. They need to be treated with respect. I'm sorry for the rider of this scooter
