Education: Pfeiffer University hosts event for youth ministries, groups

Stanly County is guaranteed to come alive on Sunday nights. As an outreach of the Village Church at Pfeiffer University, a series of events called Sunday Night Alive! will be held at 6 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month for area youth groups. Groups of any size are invited to join these special praise and worship festivities, which will include concerts and presentations by popular artists and individuals who appeal to young worshippers. These events are offered free of charge.

"The intent is to grow this ministry over the next year and outside input is encouraged as Pfeiffer strives to help youth ministries and youth groups thrive," said Rev. Dana McKim, minister to the university.

The first event will be held in the Henry Pfeiffer Chapel on Sunday, Sept. 20 with performances from "The Sight and Sound Tour," which will feature worship and concert by Four Days Late, a testimony and gospel presentation by a band member, and a performance by Ohio Avenue.

These events are made possible, in part, by a three-year $67,630 gift to the Village Church from The Duke Endowment to support a multifaceted cooperative youth programming initiative in Stanly County. Several churches in the Albemarle District of the Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church are assisting in the initiative. Pfeiffer claims one of the largest youth ministry degree programs within the United Methodist System.

- Cabarrus College Open House Scheduled for September 16. Cabarrus College of Health Sciences is hosting an open house for prospective students on Wednesday, September 16 from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Representatives from the offices of admissions, financial aid, the registrar and faculty from each program will be available to meet with prospective students.

Cabarrus College offers associate degree programs in medical assistant, nursing, occupational therapy assistant, surgical technology and associate in science. Baccalaureate completion programs are offered in health services leadership and management, medical imaging, and nursing. Continuing education courses are also available.

To ensure consideration for the spring semester an application and all supporting materials should be submitted by October 1. An application received after the deadline will be reviewed on a space available basis.

- Smart Start Rowan will host a forum for Executive Directors from across the state. Approaches and funding for early childhood initiatives will be the focus of this two day event, meeting at Rowan Business Alliance on September 21-22. Partnerships representing all 100 counties across North Carolina will be welcomed to Salisbury. John Gerstenmier, local SSR partnership E.D., shared, "In the current economic climate, we are pleased to be able to host this important event. It has only been made possible by the gracious support of our local businesses. As always, the community support for programs serving our young children has been a true blessing!"
