Salisbury-Rowan Utilities wins Peak Performance Awards

The National Association of Clean Water Agencies has issued two "Peak Performance Awards" to Salisbury-Rowan Utilities for the city's outstanding record of compliance in 2007.

More than 400 facilities in the nation were recognized with the award, including 14 in North Carolina.

"The employees within our Plant Operations and Environmental Services divisions are to be commended for their success in meeting this high standard of environmental stewardship," said Jim Behmer, interim utilities director for the city.

A Gold Award went to the "Salisbury-Rowan Wastewater Treatment Plant," representing the combined effluent of the Grants Creek and Town Creek treatment plants.

The Gold Award recognizes facilities that achieved 100 percent compliance, and this is the fourth consecutive year that Salisbury-Rowan Utilities has won a Gold Award.

A Silver Award was given to the city's Second Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Silver Award recognizes facilities with consistent National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit compliance during the year.

The Second Creek facility has won the Silver Award for three years.

At its meeting last week, Salisbury City Council recognized Martin Trexler, the operator in responsible charge (ORC) for the Salisbury-Rowan Wastewater Treatment Plant; Charles Trexler, ORC for Second Creek; Mike Frick, plant operations manager; and Sonja Basinger, environmental services manager.
