DWI driver faces child abuse charges

A 26-year-old Salisbury woman has been charged with driving while impaired after a wreck on Crescent Road that knocked out electricity to more than 700 customers Saturday night.

And she faces other charges related to having her three small children in the van while driving impaired.

Cathy Diane Adams, of 1115 Chez Charolais Road, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Charlotte for treatment of injuries.

Her three children in the 1988 Ford van were taken by Rowan Emergency Medcial Service to Rowan Regional Medical Center. N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper R.T. Coward said they did not appear to be injured.

Adams was driving on Crescent Road near the intersection with Pop Basinger Road around 8:45 p.m. when she went off the right side of the road, striking a utility pole, Coward said.

The van continued 375 feet before hitting a second utility pole.

Both poles broke off, bringing utility lines down in the road.

In paperwork filed with the Rowan Magistrate's Office, Coward described Adams as very agitated and abusive to Emergency Medical Service workers and firefighters.

Coward said Rowan Regional notified the Rowan County Department of Social Services of the situation with the children.

Sunday afternoon, a spokesman for CMC-Charlotte said Adams had been discharged.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel remained at the scene for several hours as Duke Power worked to restore power.
