Staff report

Early Wednesday morning, heavy rains overtaxed the city drainage system, causing a backup into the Wilson L. Smith Family Outpatient Center, located near the corner of Mocksville Avenue and Barker Street.

"Since the water reached into the lobby and down the hallways, the medical center is now in a recovery period that will take several days of drying out until we are back to normal operations," Rowan Regional Medical Center CEO Chuck Elliott said.

Until further notice, the Wilson L. Smith entrance will be closed to employee and public traffic.

The hospital is re-directing patients to the Smith Heart & Vascular Center entrance at the corner of Mocksville and Confederate avenues, which many people will recognize as the old emergency room entrance.

Patients may park in the designated parking area outside the Smith Heart & Vascular Center as well as in Parking Lot B across the street for their convenience. This entrance will remain open until the hospital is back to normal operations.

"We thank the community for its understanding and patience as we work to quickly recover from this unfortunate flooding situation," Elliott said in a press release.

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
