Update: Bridge leading to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium damaged in flood, closed indefinitely

The city of Kannapolis has closed the entrance to Cloverleaf Mall and the entrance to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium at Stadium Drive. There is a bridge failure at Cloverleaf Mall. Also, Dakota Street remains closed.



People can access Cloverleaf from Pennsylvania Street and the baseball stadium from Moose Road.

KANNAPOLIS — Floodwaters heavily damaged a bridge on Stadium Drive leading to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, and the bridge has been closed, an official with the Kannapolis Intimidators baseball team said Wednesday.

"The stadium itself sustained no damage other than some minor flooding, and, of course, we lost our last two home games of the season," Tim Mueller, Intimidators vice president, said in an e-mail.

"However, the bridge on Stadium Drive that leads people into the stadium and also serves as a shortcut for many to get from I-85 to the China Grove-Landis area did receive substantial damage and was nearly washed out."

Engineers are concerned the bridge still could collapse and have closed it to all vehicles, Mueller said.

Repairs to the bridge have not been scheduled yet.

"Needless to say, our local crews have quite a bit of work on their plate on bridges and roads that are far more critical than ours at this point," Mueller said.

"So the Stadium Drive-Lane Street entrance to the stadium will be closed indefinitely."

People will have to use the other entrance to the stadium. Take Lane Street to China Grove Road and then turn left on Moose Road to the stadium.
