CHINA GROVE — Bill Bare has had it up to here with the theft of diesel fuel from his company's trucks, so he's appealing to the public for help.

The words on the marquee sign in front of his business, Bare Furniture Co., read: "Thieves stealing diesel fuel."

"I'm hoping it might make people take a look," Bare said, referring to motorists passing in the night, noticing something amiss and calling law enforcement.

Bare's business is located at 1660 N. Main St., outside the China Grove town limits and beside Grove Supply Co.

Bare said the business has been broken into a number of times in its 43 years of operation, but he's never experienced the theft of diesel fuel he's experienced in recent weeks.

Bare said one day last week, one of his delivery trucks was filled with diesel fuel. The next morning, when he climbed in to use the vehicle, "It was totally empty."

Bare said one of the vehicles holds 40 gallons of fuel while the other holds 36 gallons. With the price of diesel pushing $5 a gallon, that adds up to a chunk of change.

Bare said the trucks are typically parked overnight between a pair of buildings at his business. One of the buildings is a showroom while the other is a warehouse.

The trucks aren't difficult to see from Main Street.

Bare said that on a handful of occasions, his employees have even moved the trucks to the front of the property at the close of business. There, the trucks have sat overnight almost directly under street lights.

Even there, the thefts continue.

"It's amazing to me that somebody can do that and nobody sees anything," Bare said. "Whoever's doing the stealing, they're pretty brave."

Or too stupid, perhaps, to be afraid.

Bare said he figures the thieves must be siphoning the fuel from the trucks. He said there's a plug under the fuel tanks, but there's been no sign that those plugs have been removed and the diesel drained.

Hodge Coffield, chief of the China Grove Police Department, noted that Bare Furniture Co. is outside the town limits and his officers don't patrol the business.

Still, he said he hates to hear of larcenies taking place anywhere.

Coffield said the theft of motor fuel hasn't been especially bad in China Grove. He said there have been a few catalytic converter thefts in town and he recalled some chain saws being stolen.

Along with the chain saws, thieves have picked up a few cans of gas, Coffield said.

He said the theft of gas from local service stations is rare despite the spike in prices.

"Most every station is pre-pay," Coffield said.

Put a "dummy" truck out there and fill the tank with a little fuel and the rest with water. I hope you can catch them.

the thieves just happen to know the truck was full? and no one noticed anything out of the ordinary? and they keep coming back? need to talk to your truck drivers 9 out of 10 times its an inside job.

Allow the delivery drivers to take the trucks home for the night. Would seem to be cheaper than replacing a whole tank of gas if they lived locally.

Surveillance : Friday, August 22, 2008 9:09 AM

You can get affordable video surveillance to watch your business. I know people who have them at their homes and they record when they detect motion.

Lights Don't Prevent Crime! In fact 30+ years of research (www.darksky.org) proves it helps the criminal more then anything else, especially when the light is of poor design and causes glare by shining into the eyes of adjacent property owners or those just passing by. Recent news stories show us that criminals don't even care about cameras let alone some light. Stop enriching Duke Energy's bottom line, install motion/proximity detector lights and turn off the wasteful all night lights which are essentially displaying your property to the criminals like a showcase, and hire an off duty deputy to stake out the place until the purps are apprehended! Dogs work too, but seldom make any arrests! Everybody wants to grow, so welcome to growth.

retired and not busy : Friday, August 22, 2008 8:22 AM

I'm retired and will spend some time in that area with my video camera. The service will be free to you and your company. Maybe we can catch who's stealing your gas on video. I don't know you but i can't tolerate stealing.

I agree with putting a fence around your trucks or would that cost too much? Can you put a locking gas cap on your trucks? You aren't the only having these problems and I am sure this is happening in the wee hours of the morn when Most people are asleep. Good luck!!

Deisel Theif : Friday, August 22, 2008 7:26 AM

Build a chain link fence around your trucks and put in a guard dog, or put up the correct sign, This property patrolled by armed guard, steal at your own risk.Hire a night watchman, park trucks in front of store, and be sure the thieves can see the watchman sitting inside the front door armed with adouble barrel shot gun ,theft would drop off considerably. There is no need for the watchman to ever do anything, but call 911. The visual is the purpose of his being there. When people have had enough of scum stealing from hard working people, they have to show them enough is enough.
