CHINA GROVE — Posters showing President Barack Obama in clown makeup showed up Tuesday on telephone poles along Main Street and surrounding neighborhoods.

The posters have been promoted by Alex Jones, a syndicated radio talk show host in Austin, Texas. He has been distributing the flyers on his Web site and urging listeners to videotape themselves as they post the pictures in public places.

Jones had offered a $1,000 prize to the creator of the "best" video.

Officials with the China Grove Police Department said they were not investigating the flyers and did not know who posted the pictures early Tuesday.

Alex Jones has a radio show and several Web sites. He also makes documentaries and writes for Inforwars.com and Prisonplanet.com

He started a contest in August challenging people to print out and post images of President Barack Obama as the Joker of Batman fame.

The winner was to have been announced Aug. 14.

On a portion of Web site, http://www.infowars.com/joker-obama-posters-to-go-viral/, copies of the image are available, some with the word “socialism,” some with “facism” and others advertising his inforwars.com Web site or reading “New World Order.”

He also shows a poster of George Bush as the Joker, with the word “facist” across the bottom.

On the site, he writes: “Note: Obama Joker posters should be posted in public commons where other fliers, public announcements, handbills, etc., are posted. Please do not post on federal or private property as this will be considered vandalism and will be counterproductive and diminish the message of the Obama Joker poster.

“Read about the double standard in regard to posting Obama propaganda in public: Obama Posters On Government Property Allowed; Anti-Obama Posters Called “Vandalism.”

The site further reads, “In order to awaken the people about Obama’s agenda, Alex is organizing a contest centered around the ‘Obama as Joker’ poster that has Democrats and Obamanoids going ballistic.

“Go to Infowars and download the posters, print them out, and put the posters up in public spaces around your town. Make sure to use a poster with Infowars displayed. ...”
