In the six months since Time-Warner yanked my cable over a dispute involving $20, I've made a fascinating discovery.
Books are wonderful creations.
No, I mean it. They're wonderful.
For the sake of full disclosure, I should admit that Time-Warner's action didn't mark the first time a cable company has pulled the plug on my TV.
Over the years, there have been occasions where I've forgotten to pay my cable bill, sauntered into the living room to watch a documentary like "Deal or No Deal" and switched on the tube to find myself greeted by what appears to be a hand cam filming inside an Arctic blizzard.
On all 126 channels.
No Howie Mandel! No hottie models!
Oh! The humanity!
And, before, I'd always wax indignant for a week or two, vowing that I'd had it up to here with these people and — by golly! — they'd never get another dime out of me!
And then, once that first week passed and the pains of withdrawal from not getting to watch reruns of "American Gladiator" or "America's Funniest Home Videos" became too much, I'd sheepishly lower my head and trek to the cable office where I'd beg forgiveness, pay my bill and promise to sin no more.
But I took another course of action when my cable was pulled in February. I found the rabbit-ear antennas I'd stuck away in the back of the garage and hooked 'em to my TV.
The resulting reception is surprisingly good.
I can't get the cable channels that feature classics like "Dog the Bounty Hunter" or "Pimp My Ride," but the major network stations come in crystal clear.
I can still watch "Jeopardy!" and "Seinfeld," and with the exception of college football and basketball, there's little else on TV that interests me.
(Well, there is The History Channel, but these are the sacrifices we must make if we're going to stick it to the man ... er, the cable company.)
Now, back to those aforementioned books.
Without TV to occupy my time, I've become a voracious reader.
OK, "voracious" might be a bit of a stretch, but I have gotten to where I read quite a bit. I've read 12 books in the past six months, which is about 11 more than I typically read in a year.
I've read "In Harm's Way," a terrifying account of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, and "Enemy at the Gates," the story of the World War II battle for Stalingrad.
I've read biographies about "Pistol" Pete Maravich and Joe Namath. I'd highly recommend "Black Hawk Down" and "Killing Pablo," both written by Mark Bowden.
I finished "Farewell, My Subaru" (hilarious) just last week and am about to tackle "Fool's Paradise" by fishing guru John Gierach.
I've gotten to where I'm on a first-name basis with several local librarians.
Better still, when I get the occasional solicitation from Time-Warner addressed to "Future customer," I snicker, toss it in the trash and say to myself, "No, I ain't."

To the people that are giving out information about the DTV transition: As long as you have a TV with an ATSC tuner (aka digital), rabbit ears are all you need. If your TV is older and only has an NTSC tuner, you will need a converter box to go between your rabbit ears and TV. Contrary to what the cable company says, high def with a $10 Big Lots set of Rabbit Ears looks SO MUCH better than high def from digital cable. And it's free. Most shows that are worth watching that are on cable are available for free or a small cost from iTunes, or sites like Hulu.com. I would get an AppleTV and rent movies and TV shows from iTunes. As long as you don't go crazy and spend $50 a month on rentals from iTunes, you'll probably come out cheaper in the long run.

YAY! Someone else has seen the light! : Tuesday, August 19, 2008 10:40 AM
I had a dispute with DirecTV. My box went out and I called to have it replaced. They told me I would have to sign up for another 2 years and I refused. My rabbit ears were in the bottom of the Entertainment Center....plugged those bad boys up and I have 8 Channels! I even went the step of getting the government coupon so I'm ready for digital. I like watching TV shows like Desperate Housewives, but not to worry! I go online and watch the program whenever I want! It is wonderful. People have become way too dependent on Cable and/or satellite. I have even found I am getting out more and having great educational conversations with people. My other thing was sports...the Panther Games and Racing. Now I have found a quiet local place to sit with other people to watch these events. It is trully wonderful for me. I can still keep up with my current local events through the news on the local stations that I pick up AND there are a couple of movies from time to time that I have enjoyed watching. Remember the days when there was no cable??? AHHHH...you guys should try it!

It's all good. : Tuesday, August 19, 2008 9:41 AM
I enjoy watching television using my cable service. Particularly news, Discovery Channel, History channel, PBS, etc. (Admittedly don't care for most network TV shows.) I also love to read novels and interesting nonfiction. I love movies. I love the Internet. I try, however, not to let any of these activities get in the way of more important activities such as family time, church, exercise, work and the like.

Maybe you get good service because you know all of them. I personally suspect they have the cable in my area so overloaded. During peak times it is darn near useless. Internet is slow and ordering videos on demand never works, but right now it is all I got. I am looking forward to purchasing Verizon FIOS when it gets here.

if you think you know everything : Monday, August 18, 2008 1:41 PM
well to all of those who think that you know everything you don't. most of the problems that the afore mentioned cable company is having is the direct outcome from the government switching everything to digital signals by FEB. 2009. put it this way : if you would rather have no TV, INTERNET, OR PHONE service thats fine becasue if the cable company doesnt work out the kinks now then come time for the digital transition that is what is going ot happen. NOTHING WILL WORK AT ALL I have had TIME WARNER my whole life and have never had any problems what-so-ever that werent fixed. i know most of the technicians personally and i know that they do work and take their work very seriously. but the main problem is people have to have something to complain about constantly because if you aren't happy then no one can be. so if the cable company is such a problem then cut your cable off and quite complaining.

I hate TimeWarner with a passion. Their customer service is horrible, they quality of the television is way below what it should be. I have to reboot the digital cable box (in both rooms) almost weekly in order for any of the OnDemand channels to work, and often times that does not fix the problem. I have called customer service numerous times, to no avail. I actually filed a Better Business Bureau complaint once on them and had a higher-up person call me and the issue was resolved. So, my advice to everyone here: FILE BBB REPORTS! We pay a lot of money for crappy service. You can file the BBB reports online.

Responsible Bill Payer

Am I the only one who doesn't "forget" to pay my bills? Whose fault would it be if you don't pay the bill (for anything) and get cut off? It's certainly not the company's fault. I know for a fact they don't cut you off on day one after not paying $20. If you don't want it or don't like it, have them turn it off. Don't make them out to be evil because you don't pay your bill and if you are financially "strapped" one month, give them a call and they will work with you. I have called the cable company (the 633- number) several times in the last two months and have never had a problem getting through. If you hate it that much, have it turned off!

No TV Works For Me : Sunday, August 17, 2008 6:30 PM
While making life changes 6 years ago, cable and satellite also got the boot. I've found that I only miss TV during the ACC and NCAA tournaments. When people find out I don't watch TV, the first question is always, "What do you do with your time?" I like to answer that with, "I don't have any free time to watch TV!". No TV leaves lots of quiet time for books, puzzles, music, NPR (I'm a minor addict), yoga, walks in the woods, trying new recipes. I have plenty of time for yard work, home repairs (I do love to paint!!) and learning new skills (knitting and quilting). Life without TV is grand - I wouldn't have it any other way.

My Timewarner cable is slow. It takes 5 full seconds for the channel to change, if it doesn't freeze. When it does freeze, at least once a night, I have to reset the whole thing which is a 10 minute process. And try to get someone on the phone local - you can't - because there is no one local - they are all in Charlotte.

When we first moved to Rowan County, we couldn't get Time Warner where we lived. We got a dish for a while, but had problems with it. So then we went without cable for a long time. We didn't miss it. Still had a DVD/VHS player. And yes, we did some good reading. I agree with Mr. Huffman -- there's not much to miss when the cable goes out.

getting know calls for months now
Thanks Time Warner for inefficiency : Sunday, August 17, 2008 1:49 PM
for more than 6 months I have been told by friends who have A.T. And T. telephone service that when they call try to us they get only a rapid busy signal. When I call Time Warner about it they want me to keep a log of all people who tried to call us, their phone numbers and the approximate time they tried to call. Yes you read correctly. First, is it not TW's job to fix the problem? And how would I know which people tried to call me, the calls do not go through. We have the bundled TW service. To cancel the phone part saves us $8 a month. The upside is I get no telemarketers calling and nobody calls to nag me to volunteer. Thanks Time Warner

No TV for us either!! : Sunday, August 17, 2008 1:31 PM
Tired of everyone zoning out in front of the TV and trying to be a little more environmentally consicious, my husband pulled the plug on our TV about a month ago!! We have three kids and I have to admit that it bothered me more than them, with the exception of the occassional Olympics, we have stuck by our new household rule, and once school starts and the Olympics are over, I don't think we will miss it, and I will quite enjoy the spending the money I save from the cable company on a weekend camping trip!!

Just got cable : Sunday, August 17, 2008 11:37 AM
we have gone without cable for years, then decided that it would be cheaper to bundle mu services and get cable, phone and internet from TWC. Please tell me what the dispute was over so I don't make the same mistake, these days $20 can make or break you. If they are hard to deal with or resovle problems I might need to get out now.

Digital TV : Sunday, August 17, 2008 9:56 AM
You won't be able to use your rabbit ears in a few months without a digital converter box, which will cost you around $40 (or so). You can get more information on this at http://www.dtv.gov/ .
