The lives of the three young men who pleaded guilty Thursday in the death of a mo-ped rider will not be easy, their attorneys said.

Eric Taylor's attorney, Darrin Jordan, said his client has suffered since Michael Brown's death. Brown died May 12, 2006, after he wrecked his mo-ped. Some of the people in the Jeep Taylor was driving had thrown eggs at Brown before he wrecked.

Taylor had planned to attend N.C. State University before that night, Jordan said. But when the university learned of the pending charges in Rowan County, Jordan said, school officials told Taylor he couldn't attend classes there.

"He suffered that punishment very early on, while the rest of these individuals proceeded to pursue their goals," Jordan said.

Taylor pleaded guilty to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and felony hit and run.

When Taylor found out he couldn't attend N.C. State, Jordan said, he briefly enrolled at Wake Tech in Raleigh.

But Taylor has suffered from anxiety and depression as a result of the mo-ped incident, Jordan said, and he couldn't focus on his school work.

He moved back to Rowan to live with his father and enrolled in Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, but his problems continued, Jordan said.

Taylor started using alcohol to "self medicate," Jordan said.

Jordan said Taylor has a girlfriend now and works four nights a week picking up garbage. His life is "a long way" from his original dreams of college, Jordan said.

Alstin Lee Vanderford, 21, also delayed his college plans, his attorney, James Davis, said. Vanderford, along with Taylor and 23-year-old Brandon Heathcliff Lowery, pleaded guilty to lesser charges Thursday and will avoid jail time. The three other young people who were in the Jeep that night struck

deals with the Rowan County district attorney and face misdemeanor

charges.

After the accident, Jordan said, Rachel Ann Miller and Patsy Elizabeth

Morgan, who are both 21 now, went on to attend college. Derek Talbert,

now 23, is a student at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Vanderford had played basketball at East Rowan High School and went on to play basketball for a while at Pfeiffer University, Davis said.

He said Vanderford is holding down a job while attending Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

"He hopes — hopes — to get a college degree," Davis said.

Vanderford already had a record before the May 2006 incident.

According to court documents, he received a prayer for judgment in 2004 when he was convicted of ethnic intimidation, a misdemeanor. Vanderford and three other teens had thrown water on a Wendy's employee working the drive-through window. The teens directed racial slurs at the woman, who was black.

Then Vanderford was convicted in October 2006 of underage possession of a malt beverage, a misdemeanor.

Lowery also had a record. He was placed on probation for a misdemeanor assault charge. The incident occurred in September 2003.

Lowery's attorney, James Randolph, said Thursday his client has suffered from depression and has lost about 40 pounds since Brown's death.

"He had a hard time finding work," Randolph said.

Lowery graduated from East Rowan High School in 2003 and worked various jobs, including construction with his father, Randolph said.

Now, Lowery lives in Mecklenburg County and is working at a salon in Charlotte. His mother helped him get the job, Randolph said.

Randolph said Lowery might lose his job — he has to surrender his driver's license after pleading guilty Thursday.

"I believe the only transportation available will be a mo-ped for them," Randolph said of his client, Taylor and Vanderford.

The convicted felons' LIVES are affected????? : Friday, August 15, 2008 9:23 PM

If "defendants' lives are affected after the crash," then they're getting a mere foretaste of what the afterlife holds for them, unless they repent.

FED UP
Rowan County needs a reality check : Friday, August 15, 2008 12:06 PM

Every one of these kids should be in jail for what they did. I do not feel sorry for them if their lives have not turned out the way they planned. Michael Brown doesn't have a plan. He's dead. Even if Taylor had not hit Brown with his jeep, those kids were old enough to stop and help him. They could have saved his life. They are selfish brats who cared more about themselves. Am I to feel sorry for them after they left a man lying on the road to die so they could go to college? I don't know how these defense lawyers can show up in church on Sundays and profess to be such "fine Christians" when they go in a courtroom every day to help put the scum right back on the street to kill somebody else, sell somebody's kid a crack rock and rape someone's daughter. Not everyone is gulity but these people are! Michael Brown did not receive justice in Rowan County. Maybe if voters in this county would go to the polls and elect people that will change things around here then things WILL CHANGE. As long as voters keep voting these same folks in then this is what we got! No one ran against Kenerly in the last election because the voters in this county keep him in there. Same thing with Sheriff Wilhelm! HE is the reason we have the drug problems we have. HE won't do nothing about it. This town is ran by Republicans who have been voted in by Republicans who stick their old money heads in the sand and pretend things are just lovely! VOTE THEM OUT AND SEE A CHANGE! We need a new DA, a new Sheriff and a new face on our county. Salisbuy is now the drug capital of NC! Now aren't we proud? Do not sit around and complain about things if you are not going to do anything to bring change around here.

Hatred is just as bad : Friday, August 15, 2008 10:39 AM

There is so much hatred toward these young people. But for the grace of God this could have happened to any of you posting these hate-filled comments. Each of you need to examine your hearts and ask God to forgive you for your vile hatred. Your hatred is just as bad as what they did. They did wrong, yes, but they are paying an appropriate price. This was an accident, not murder! They did wrong by not reporting the accident. Finally, trust me, you won't see any of them in the police blotter in the next six months, probably never.

Only Human : Friday, August 15, 2008 10:13 AM

What gets me is the fact that everyone is wishing the worse for these young men. Come on people, don't pretend for a moment that YOU ALL have never done something YOU were ashamed of. Maybe you didn't get caught, but I am tired of everyone acting like they have never done anything stupid before in there life. Yes, I will agree that these three young men should be punished, but how would YOU ALL feel if you were in their shoes. They are only human and we make mistakes, some more than others and some more serious than others. But we are ALL far from perfect, so stop acting like YOU ALL are. I can't believe someone would make the comment, "Watch out for the flying eggs and jeeps"! That just goes to show that you yourself are no better than these young men. Mr. Brown by far deserved to have a second chance at life, but don't destroy those accused as well- like I said, we are only human.

ARE WE SUPPOSE TO FEEL SORRY FOR THEM? : Friday, August 15, 2008 8:35 AM

I feel like these young adults knew the difference between right and wrong. What may have started out as fun ended up in tragedy. At least they still have a chance to make something of there lives. The man who died does not. They choose their future that night, not the courts or the law. They were old enough to know better, but they were used to being bailed out by their parents. Its time to grow up and be responsible for your own actions.

NO ONE KNOWS : Friday, August 15, 2008 8:12 AM

I do not and never would condone taking someone else's life in any way. The family of the victim will suffer for the rest of their life, just as anyone who has lost a love one. No, you don't have to give pitty on these people who caused this accident. You don't even have to forgive if that is your choice. I can tell you from seeing it first hand no jail time or sentence you give down on these people will amount to the self judgement they live with on a daily basis. They build their own jail in their mind. While you are ridiculing these people remember judge lest not ye be judged and cast the first stone. Because, most people unwilling to forgive are the very one's sitting there on Sunday morning's proclaiming to believe that statement. Dragging down anyone involved does not change what has happened. Maybe it makes you as a person feel better but it doesn't change anything. I am not taking up for anyone of these six people. I do not know anyone of them. I just want people to realize they have the right to be angry, but we are all human no matter what the cicumstances and we are suppose to lift each other up not tear them down. You never know when it could be your family. And while you sit there saying not mine, I don't guess any family has ever thought it would be their's.

Give me a break! : Friday, August 15, 2008 7:33 AM

Cry me a flippin' river, will you? What a ridiculous article. We seem to lose focus on who the real victims are here, and it's certainly not that group of delinquents who committed such a horrendous crime. It's the family of Michael Brown who will forever be in pain. Yeah, these kids are "depressed" because they weren't able to carry on with their little party lifestyle at college. That is why their lives have changed, because for once they weren't handed what they wanted. I just hate that the primaddona little girls were able to carry on with their lives as normal. Hopefully, something will become of their trial to hit them and Derek Talbert where it hurts. And as far as poor Eric Taylor resorting to alcohol to "self-medicate" goes, I'm still laughing at that one. Boy, he's got someone fueled, but at least he has an excuse for drinking now!!!
