Freightliner calling back hundreds

Freightliner is sending out recall notices to approximately 650 workers who were laid off in June and will reestablish a second shift at its Cleveland truck manufacturing plant.

Amy Sills, corporate communications head for Daimler Trucks North America, said Monday afternoon the employees will report back to work Aug. 18 for a couple of weeks of orientation and training.

A "partial second shift"' will then be reinstated effective Sept. 2.

"Although the North American commercial vehicle industry remains depressed across all market segments, the recall reflects recent increases in customer orders for the new Class 8 Freightliner Cascadia truck manufactured at the Cleveland plant," Sills said.

The reinstatement of the second shift will bring total employment at the Cleveland facility to 1,985, Sills added.

With that workforce, the Freightliner plant is Rowan County's third largest employer behind the Rowan-Salisbury School System and Food Lion.

In June, Freightliner laid off roughly 1,500 workers — some with more than 10 years experience — and eliminated the second shift.

Those layoffs followed 1,180 workers who were laid off when the third shift was cut April 1, 2007.

Debbie Davis, head of the the Employment Security Commission's JobLink Center in Salisbury, confirmed Monday her office has been hearing from some laid-off Freightliner employees who said they have been recalled.

A person at the United Auto Workers Local 3520 also confirmed the recall of some workers.

Some notices had yet to be delivered Monday. Employees have been laid off and called back based on seniority.

After the most recent Freightliner layoffs, Rowan County's unemployment rate rose to 6.4 percent in June.

Make an Educated decision! : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 7:52 PM

To the workers that have been laid off,an are being recalled, please weigh your options. If you are being offered a chance to further your education and not bare the expense of costly school loans, to not take advantage of this benefit would be a great mistake on your part. To the workers that are on first shift, and have a good chance of being placed on second shift, you need to be concerned!!! Please pay attention to the writing on the wall!!! In Freightliners past this company has set a pattern, when orders are down and no one is ordering trucks, The company will lay one shift off..... All the company wants is to deliver the trucks in which they promised to some major customers by the end of the year. As yourselves after that then what???? My educated decision would be that the company would lay off a shift, this is how business operates,so please pay attention and educate yourself if you are afforded the opportunity!

Uneducated? : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 4:18 PM

I think that was a very rude comment about the people at Freightliner being uneducated. I beg to differ. I know several people who worked at Freightliner, including my husband, and they are all very well educated! I would rather see someone working at a place like that, than not working at sitting on their butts drawing in wellfare. Think about it. Seems your uneducated to say such ignorant things.

Laid off employee : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 3:56 PM

Let me first comment on "get and education" I was laid off back in April of 07 from Freightliner..I have a college degree. If I am recalled, yes, I will return to my job at Freightliner...the pay and benefits are uncomparable to any companies here. I loved my job there and the people I worked with were the greatest. I have an education but having an education and having a job you are happy with are totally different things. I am glad the recall has started, I just hope it continues so that all of us can return soon.

Educated Freightliner Employee
: Tuesday, August 05, 2008 3:53 PM

To respond to the remark about Freightliner employees being "uneducated". If you recall, there were only a "select" few UAW members standing on the side of Hwy. 70 picketing. The parking lot was still full and we were still building trucks. Didn't miss a lick. Most of us are highly educated and work long hours for our pay. DO NOT put all of the employees in the same category because of some "strike".

Let me just say, that if you had put in all these years at a job that pays like Freightliner and provides great benefits, and didn't want your job, you would be crazy. I believe the person who needs to get an education is the one who says they wouldn't do it.

Re:ship the jobs to Mexico : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 3:15 PM

Why would you speak negatively about the "workers" they are doing their job and earning a good living for it. Some people are doctors, lawyers, construction workers, fast food workers, and so on. So for you to comment on there level of education just shows that you probably got a little degree but was unable to do anything with it, therefore you are stuck in a job making less than the Freightliner employees and you are upset. Be happy with your life and job if in fact you have one and dont rain on the Freightliner employees parade. Maybe you should ship out to Mexico hater....

Get an Education : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 2:34 PM

If you are recalled and go back then you are asking for it. You need to finally recognize that Freightliner is a dead end and will never again be what it once was. The writing is all over the walls. My advise is to get out of Cleveland and find gainful employment elsewhere.

Ship the jobs to Mexico. The people that work there are uneducated, plain and simple. Uneducated workers are the same everywhere, the only difference is in Mexico they don't unionize and stike when their wages of $15+/hour and benefits are being threatened. If I were making that kind of money with nothing more than a high school diploma, I sure as my life wouldn't strike. I would be incredibly thankful I had a job that paid that well without an education.

What do THEY drive? : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 12:52 PM

Look how many Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, Hyundais, Kia's etc are in the Freighliner parking lot. What's sauce for the goode is sauce for the gander. - Its great to see more American workers making American trucks, but with so many Freightliner workers driving imported cars (though some are perhaps built in the US, the profits are still leaving the country), they have no right to brag about their jobs and ask us to support American manufacturers.

An American Worker
About Time : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 9:42 AM

Freightliner. Kenworth. Mack. Diamond Reo. White. Marmon. These names and more conjure up thoughts of AMERICAN workers MAKING AMERICAN Trucks... Or so one would have thought. Thanks to NAFTA (Now Another Fired Tradeskill American) these Icons of the American Road are coming in with stamps from Mexico and Canada. Back in the 1970's there was a slogan .. "Buy AMERICAN, The JOB you save may be your OWN"... Perhaps we should have listened.. I am glad Freightliner is restarting production and giving AMERICANS back their jobs, but I can only hope that it lasts.
