Freightliner to recall 650 workers

Freightliner is sending out recall notices to approximately 650 workers who were laid off in June and will reestablish a second shift at its Cleveland truck manufacturing plant.

Amy Sills, corporate communications head for Daimler Trucks North America, said Monday afternoon the employees will report back to work Aug.18 for a couple of weeks of orientation and training.

A "partial second shift" will then be reinstated effective Sept. 2.

"Although the North American commercial vehicle industry remains depressed across all market segments, the recall reflects recent increases in customer orders for the new Class 8 Freightliner Cascadia truck manufactured at the Cleveland plant," Sills said.

The reinstatement of the second shift will bring total employment at the Cleveland facility to 1,985, Sills added.

With that workforce, the Freightliner plant is Rowan County's third largest employer behind Rowan-Salisbury Schools and Food Lion.

In June, Freightliner laid off roughly 1,500 workers -- some with more than 10 years experience -- and eliminated the second shift.

Those layoffs followed 1,180 workers who were laid off when the third shift was cut April 1, 2007.

Debbie Davis, head of the the Employment Security Commission's JobLink Center in Salisbury, confirmed Monday her office has been hearing from some laid-off Freightliner employees who said they have been recalled.

A person at United Auto Workers Local 3520 also confirmed the recall of some workers.

Some notices had yet to be delivered Monday. Employees have generally been laid off and called back based on seniority.

After the most recent Freightliner layoffs, Rowan County's unemployment rate rose to 6.4 percent in June.

The production industry/factory work is leaving America period. It WILL NOT come back! This is one of the last factories left here and when it's gone, it's gone. We, the people, need to understand the trend and educate ourselves to work in the current industries. It will not get worse and then get better! Think back to the first and second industrial revolutions. we are moving on folks. That's how we develop as a nation.

Uneducated Freightliner Employee
: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 1:30 PM

I can only thank God for the four years that I was employed. At that time, it was MY responsibility to take care of what I created,(MY CHILDREN) AND not to exceed that. During those four years, not only was I paid VERY reasonable wages, but I was provided with the BEST benefits for me and MY children. I, for one, took advantage of that. I was hired in 2004, and hopefully one day I will be re-called. I still find it hard to believe there are some who see "US" as UNEDUCATED..(MY OPINION OF UNEDUCATED ARE THOSE WHO: SIT AROUND, DARE TO FILL OUT AN APPLICATION, AND LET THE GOVERNMENT TAKE CARE OF OUR RESPONSIBLITIES).It takes a lot of hard work, determination, and willingness to learn how to perform OUR jobs properly, in an amounted time frame. Hopefully, in time, the economy will get better, orders will come in fruitfully, and me and my fellow co-workers can go back to doing what we have been trained in life to do..feed our families, without strain. This to hall pass!

Educated : Wednesday, August 06, 2008 12:12 PM

I love how all of these people who are telling us "uneducated workers" at Freightliner not to go back. First, Learn how to spell, I may be an uneducated truck builder, but at least I can spell. Secondly, proof read what you are writing before you hit the enter button, some of these comments make no sense, and its hard for us uneducated truck builders to make out what your trying to say. At least if it does go to Mexico, We will have a leg up on all these so called highly educated post readers, We can at least fill out an application properly and speak in complete sentences

Out sourcing to Mexico, China.... : Wednesday, August 06, 2008 9:15 AM

For years greedy corporate managers have been taking jobs out of the country in the quest for cheap labor in hopes of pocketing more for themselves. I predict that it will one day backfire. Other countries will one day realize that they don't need some boss in the US, they will make and manage themselves and then the CEO job will also be outsourced!

dont go back : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 4:26 PM

for those who are complaining about hard work and no thanks or those saying freightliner is moving to mexico....DONT GO BACK!!! You should be lucky to even have a job much less get it back. i have worked on the cabline and worked myself to death but i have done harder work for less money. so be sensible. if you hate your job and all you are goin to do is complain. FIND ANOTHER JOB and good luck. this market is hard enough to deal with, much less to do it unhappily. i love my job at freightliner and am glad to be back. just be thankful you had a job for so long. i do believe an employer needs to thank his employees for their work but we need to thank them for just having a job. and a good one at that. go to work somewhere else where you have to pay for insurance, no sick days, no vacation, no dental, no vision, and then complain. but u wont. thank god for everything he has done for you so far and will continue to do.

Be sensable guys.... : Tuesday, August 05, 2008 2:55 PM

Will Freightliner go to Mexico?...Probably. When?....Who knows, but the fact is no matter how well they pay or how good their insurance is they are unstable. It's hard enough to make ends meet now with the economy the way it is without having a job that's here today and gone tomorrow. If the best you can do is a place like Freightliner then my prayers go out to you and I wish you the best of luck but my family has learned from experience with Frieghtliner that if you can manage to educate yourself in another field that can provide you with job security believe me....You'll regret the day you wasted your time with a place like Freightliner and let it take away what you've worked hard for. PLEASE think about it and best of luck to all.

Freightliner doesn't build a truck unless it is either ordered from a customer or a dealer. Its not a matter of not being able to sell them.

Save your money up guys. Its gonna get worse after it gets better. That new Mexico plant in Coahuila is gonna start production in Jan of 2009. The Santiago plant hasn't laid off 1 single employee since it opened. If Freightliner doesn't promise you people a certain percentage of the orders, You will be in the same boat in another year. Good luck

they do produce a quality truck but the fact remains that no one is buying them. With freight rates the way they are it will continue to decline unless freight rates catch up with the times. But otherwise, glad to see at least some people getting there jobs back for the time being.

I have heard alot of negative comments over the past months about Freightliner and it's not fair. This company, and it's employees, did everything they could to keep employees as long as possible. Freightliner is here to stay because it's a quality company producing a quality truck!
