E-mail to a friend

Update Friday, 3:30 p.m.

Staff report

Salisbury Police are looking for anyone with information about recent break-ins at several downtown businesses.

"We are investigating a series of break-ins downtown. This is the second night there's been break-ins," Police Chief Mark Wilhelm said Thursday.

Someone broke into the Blue Vine on South Main Street, Hardiman's Furniture store and Rainy Day Bookstore on East Innes Street. Wilhelm said there was an attempted break-in at Frost Bites on South Main Street. The break-ins occurred over a two-night period about a week ago.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Salisbury-Rowan Crime Stoppers at 866-639-5245 or the Salisbury Police at 704-638-5333.

Correction:

Salisbury Emporium, at 230 E. Kerr St., was not broken into recently. Earlier information was incorrect.

Visible police presence at night might help. Use that officer on the little two wheel thingamagig.

cameras : Friday, July 18, 2008 6:12 PM

cameras monitoring the downtown is a good idea. It could be linked to the police dept. or taped. Just have to come up with the money to do it...

There have been several recent car break-ins in the downtown area where bricks were used either to break, or attempt to break windows. You have to wonder if the thiefs are getting braver since they weren't caught breaking into cars and stealing loose change.

Why isn't this on the front page? : Friday, July 18, 2008 9:26 AM

Several downtown businesses get broken into, and that news is placed on the second page of the second section of the paper - I find this strange. Additionally, why wasn't the break-in at Habitat for Humanity mentioned? Why wasn't the nature of these break-ins described? The one at Habitat involved a brick thrown in through the front glass door. I think that the other break-ins were the same. So what we have are brazen front door entrys by simply throwing bricks through glass - and this is happening within a few blocks of the police dept. and right in plain view of the two most heavily travelled streets in our city. A front page article was warranted. A solicitation to public discussion is in order, e.g., should we have cameras monitoring the downtown? I own a downtown business, and I am about to screw 3/4 4x8 plywood to the metal frames which hold my storefront glass. Unless we want our precious historic downtown Salisbury to look like East Saint Louis, we at least need our newspaper to let the community know what is happening to our downtown.
