KANNAPOLIS — A Kannapolis teenager has been charged with attempted armed robbery of a Subway restaurant Monday.

Larry James Hancock Jr., 16, of 1625 Oakcrest Drive, faces a charge of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and remained in the Cabarrus County Jail Thursday under $50,000 bond.

Two men entered the Subway at 2221 Roxie St. at 3:26 p.m. Monday. They sat at a table briefly and then left, according to Detective Sgt. Chris Nesbitt.

A few minutes later, one of the men returned to the restaurant, produced a firearm and demanded money.

According to an officer's report, the employee stepped away from the counter, and the gunman left the business without getting any money, Nesbitt said. The report was not clear about what prompted the robber to leave suddenly.

Kannapolis patrol officers got descriptions of the men and immediately began canvassing the area.

The store employee told officers both men appeared to be teenagers. The employee described one of the men as African-American, tall, thin and wearing a white T-shirt. The second man also was black but short and heavy set, wearing a gray sleeveless shirt.

During their search, officers located and arrested Hancock. Officer Roberto Tito Rodriguez was the investigating officer.

Nesbitt said officers are still looking for the second man.

Police ask anyone with information about the attempted robbery to call the Police Department at 704-920-4000 or Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers at 704-93-Crime (932-7463).
